Blackpool ‘Blues’

In a night which saw a complete reversal of the old structure in Blackpool, the Labour group was thrown out including leader Roy Fisher, deputy leader Eddie Collett ,Mayor Allan Matthews, and social services supremo Sue Wright all lost their seats to the Conservatives.

The final tally is Conservatives 26 seats (+13) , Labour 13 ( - 12) and the Lib Dems 3 (-1).

The Blackpool area BNP fared badly in that it won no seats, but several incoming names as well as outgoing councillors noted that the votes for the BNP candidates were in three figure numbers, and were not the least votes in each area, in a mid range turn out.

The BNP results were Roy Goodwin (Highfield) 339 , John Kelly (Warbreck ) 313, Les Joy (Park) 339, Joan Cain (Haweside) 369, Phillip Murphy (Greenland) 370, Chris Ryan (Claremont) 275, and Kathryn Kelly (Bispham) 366. Comments by the party will be advised to the site.

Steve (thanks for the report Steve)

  1. Nice result here. Although the BNP candidates got far too many votes, they got NO councillors. And they thought the Blackpool branch was in for a clear sweep. Well done to everyone at Blackpool who campaigned against them.

  3. Thanks to everyone for their support over the last few weeks and months. This is far from the end our campaign against the BNP in Blackpool. We won't rest till long after they've stopped fielding candidates in Blackpool (and we won't stop even then).

Both the TUC and my Students' Union are working on the next stages of our campaign to expose the lies, terrorism, and thuggery of these Nazis and keep them out of Blackpool.

If anyone's interested a full list of results in Blackpool can be found at:
