An investigation is being carried out into the alleged breach of a music licence at a controversial British National Party festival in Denby. People living in the village complained to police and Amber Valley Borough Council about noise from the event, which attracted 2,500 party members, at the weekend.
Council chief executive Peter Carney said the authority issued a noise abatement notice to organisers after complaints about loud music late on Thursday. The notice gave the authority the power to prosecute if licensing agreements were subsequently breached. He said the council had received several telephone calls from people claiming that music had gone on past the agreed 10.30pm cut-off time.
He said: "We are currently investigating alleged breaches of the premises licence. We are also investigating reports of alleged breaches of the abatement notice after the event. We had officers measuring noise, so we'll have that evidence to look at too."
Last month, the council granted the festival a licence permitting live and recorded music to be played until 10.30pm on Friday and Saturday. It also allowed the sale of alcohol until 7pm on Saturday but stated that no licensed activities could take place on Sunday and the premises must close by 3pm on Sunday.
John Lumsden lives opposite the festival site in Codnor Denby Lane and was active in trying to prevent it. He said: "The noise was very loud and went on until about 12.40am."
The festival was held on land owned by BNP member and Denby parish councillor Alan Warner. He said: "When you have a festival you expect to have music and we were licensed for that. If they went over a bit with the time they could play music I wasn't aware and it didn't keep me awake."
Amber Valley MP Judy Mallaber said she spent the weekend visiting residents in Denby to assess the impact the festival was having on them.
She said: "I always said it's completely unsuitable as a site. I'll be telling the borough council all the things that struck me as breaches of the condition. The idea of having it here again is horrendous."
Police said there was no trouble but they received seven complaints about noise. The Evening Telegraph reported yesterday how organisers of the event said they intended to return every year.
Steve Lambert, borough council licensing manager, said: "Each event will be judged on its own merits but there is a chance that incidents from previous years may be taken into account."
Concerns about noise at the festival were also aired at a meeting of Denby Parish Council last night, when members of the public were advised to voice complaints to the borough council.

The police said "no trouble".
ReplyDeleteDo you think someone might be spinning you a yarn about the punch-up?
Just like the Croatia story?
Oh dear, trying for the Disinformation Crown again, are you?
ReplyDeleteWe know there was a punch-up and we know about the whole Croatia thing - as will the entire BNP membership pretty shortly.
Observer obviously thinks we're all as stupid as the average BNP member!
ReplyDeleteHaving looked at the bnp party awards 2007 i note that the diva dicky barnbrook did not pick up one award this year, i can only guess that the level of noise complained about must have been dickys howls of rage and disappointment at being passed over. what a diva....
ReplyDeleteAre you saying that the whole BNP membership will no about Spence and Croatia, or just Croatia? I was planning on joining the BNP, but if Spence is out, then so am I, and I'll wait till classy people like Bowden and Spence start something - it seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that NG would rather have social misfits and thugs like Collett and C.U.N.T. around him then someone with half a brain and no Nazi baggage. Is Barnbrook next?
ReplyDeleteJonathan Bowden will next be speaking in London on September 8th. It will be interesting to see how the nucleus of opposition to Griffin develops.
ReplyDeleteI was there and I saw no trouble all weekend. The nearest there was when one person entered the main field followed by another person carrying a video camera. Both were escorted off the site when the first man started throwing nazi salutes and the video camera confiscated by security. These were blatantly Searchlight/UAF infiltrators trying to make the event look like a nazi rally rather than the fun family festival that it was.
ReplyDelete"Is Barnbrook next?"
ReplyDeletePossibly, but only because he suffers delusions of grandeur whilst under the influence and has told members he will challenge Griffin.
'Are you saying that the whole BNP membership will no about Spence and Croatia, or just Croatia?'
ReplyDeleteBoth hopefully but Croatia definitely.
'I was planning on joining the BNP, but if Spence is out, then so am I, and I'll wait till classy people like Bowden and Spence start something...'
You're a fool if you were and Spence is far from classy. Bowden is already allied with Ebanks' NNP and has been for a while now.
'it seems to me (correct me if I'm wrong) that NG would rather have social misfits and thugs like Collett and C.U.N.T. around him then someone with half a brain and no Nazi baggage. Is Barnbrook next?'
Strange, isn't it.
"I was there and I saw no trouble all weekend."
ReplyDeleteI've heard it was quite late on the Saturday - you might have turned in for the night.
"These were blatantly Searchlight/UAF infiltrators"
Here we go again - there's really no point pretending any more, as the North East Regional organiser has publicly admitted the party is now in the process of expelling its Sedgefield by-election hero Andrew Spence.
BTW, is this a world political record - to progress from hero to zero in less than three weeks.
"Having looked at the bnp party awards 2007 i note that the diva dicky barnbrook did not pick up one award this year"
ReplyDeleteEddy Butler picked up the award for "best regional stall" though.
How heavy are these awards? Perhaps Eddy could use it to defend himself next time he's assaulted by Griffin's right-hand man Tony Lecomber?
Bowden seemed classy and Spence at least seemed honest, and didn't have the neo-nazi baggage. I allowed myself the fantasy that the BNP might actually become electable under such people. Clearly Griffin's paranoia is far more important to him than the good of the country, and he would rather surround himself with scum. Let's hope they all form a real party.
ReplyDeleteIs Bowden speaking at a BNP event in London?
ReplyDeleteI don't like Chris Jackson and the old guard, and think NG is very talented. But his judgement in people is distressing, and it seems that his best people are leaving, leaving behind misfits like Collett who will never give the party the image it needs. I wish Barnbrook wasn't a drunk, but he always comes across as far too angry anyway, in my opinion.
I suppose before I write off NG and the BNP, I should at least know why Spence is being expelled. Can anyone help?
ReplyDelete"The nearest there was when one person entered the main field followed by another person carrying a video camera. Both were escorted off the site when the first man started throwing nazi salutes and the video camera confiscated by security"
ReplyDeleteOn what authority was this camera "confiscated"/stolen?
Probably Nick Griffin, as he saw it as a plot by the BNP disidents to expose Griffin's faithful as the Hitler worshippers they are.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't one of Griffin's bodyguards have sickening tattoos praising the German Nazis across his chest, or something?
'On what authority was this camera "confiscated"/stolen?'
ReplyDeleteNo-one's. It's bullshit.
'Doesn't one of Griffin's bodyguards have sickening tattoos praising the German Nazis across his chest, or something?'
You must be referring to Mick Holmes, the little sweetheart. You can see him in all his glory, the poser, at Kirklees Unity, here:

(on the left and down a bit).
'I suppose before I write off NG and the BNP, I should at least know why Spence is being expelled.'
ReplyDeleteIt's our understanding that he's resigned - it's just that the BNP feel the need to expel him to save face (too late). Presumably he attacked Walker and/or Collett, physically or verbally. Griffin will think of something, never fear.
Shame it wasn't Griffin himself who got thumped! Lying scheming arsehole that he is.
ReplyDeleteCome back Andrew.....you done good!!
