BBC - Protesters in city demonstrations

At least 2,000 of people are protesting in two political demonstrations in Manchester city centre.

The English Defence League (EDL) has arrived in the city to stage a protest in Piccadilly Gardens to campaign against Islamic extremists. This has prompted a planned counter-protest by Unite Against Fascism (UAF).

Police said 18 people had been arrested in Manchester on suspicion of public order offences. One arrest was on suspicion of carrying a weapon.

Both sides are facing each other in Piccadilly Gardens and are separated by a line of police officers, dogs and mounted police. Matt Trewern, from BBC Radio Manchester, said the atmosphere was "quite tense" and there had been a series of confrontations between opposing protesters.

He said: "The police are trying to keep the two groups separate and they have managed to confine some of the EDL protesters to the narrow streets in the Northern Quarter. Trouble started when 100 members of EDL arrived at Piccadilly Gardens and they were immediately met with shouts of 'racists' and 'off our streets' by members of the UAF, who had already congregated at Piccadilly. The atmosphere is tense, but it is not yet out of control."

He said the number of protesters from the UAF outnumber those from the EDL by about three to one.

Assistant Chief Constable Garry Shewan said: "The presence of so many protesters in the city has proved a challenge and while many have turned out to protest peacefully the police reaction has been necessary in order to prevent the few hell-bent on violent confrontation. Today we've made 18 arrests, many of whom were thought to be agitators and trouble-makers."

Greater Manchester Police confirmed one man, believed to be heading to the protest, had been arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of distributing racially aggravated material.

Muslim leaders have renewed appeals for people to avoid the demonstrations. A recent EDL event in Birmingham led to counter-demonstrations and bricks being hurled at riot police. Up to 90 people were arrested.

Nanu Miah, a community leader from Oldham, said: "We are not encouraging people to go, we don't know who EDL is and what could happen."

HnH - EDL leader arrested

I've just heard that one of the leaders of the English Defence League was arrested this morning in Birmingham on suspicion of distributing racially aggravated material.

Meanwhile EDL supporters are beginning to descend on Manchester. I understand that football hooligans from 20-25 gangs are making the trip, mainly from across the North West and West Midlands. A few are coming down from the North East and up from the South Coast.

Hope not hate

As one of the principle causes of the demise of the British pub it seems strange, though not surprising, that the nazzers should be meeting in that shithole that is Wetherspoon's.

Methinks Mr Wetherspoon just did a Gerald Ratner.

  11. The MEN loves this stuff, it's a freak show event for them and so justifies their existence. Just read the reports by their "reporters" about "the EDL lads" to see how excited they are.

The sooner the MEN goes out of business the sooner these kind of far-right performances will wither on the vine.

  18. Thanks for the BBC link have just checked it out, says now some 48 were arrested.

Perhaps Manchester and other big towns and cities will listen in future when they get the mass letters and emails from HnH.

They could have saved themselves and the police a whole load of trouble and expense if they had banned it as requested.

Still when do they ever listen to the voice of reason.

  21. From the Birmingham Mail

Birmingham man arrested over "racist" leaflets ahead of EDL march

THIRTY people have been arrested as violent protests erupted in Manchester as the English Defence League clashed with an anti-fsacist march.

The first arrest took place in Birmingham - scene of two previous violent clashes triggered by EDL - before the lunchtime protest in Manchester had even begun.

A 39-year-old man, who was believed to be travelling to Manchester, was arrested in Birmingham on suspicion of distributing racially aggravated material and possessing cocaine.

Trouble flared as the English Defence League (EDL) faced off against Unite Against Fascism (UAF) in Manchester city centre.

The two factions stood on opposite sides of Piccadilly Gardens, separated by a heavy police line, with officers dressed in riot gear and on horseback.

Police imposed a lockdown around the area where an estimated 2,000 protesters gathered.

A UAF protester shouted through a megaphone: "There's many more of us than you," and the crowd sang out: "Who are you?"

The perimeter of Piccadilly Gardens was blockaded by police officers in fluorescent jackets.

A small group of EDL protesters walked among the throng of shoppers chanting: "We love our country."

The sight of a Union flag inflamed supporters of the UAF, causing large numbers of protesters to go in search of the culprit.

Small-scale disruption took place on the streets of the city centre, causing riot officers wearing hard helmets and carrying batons to go running after suspects.

James Carter, 23, from Chorlton, Manchester, said: "I'm down here to stop the Nazis. I think the turn-out on this side (UAF) symbolises the perception of Manchester and how we feel about racism."

One onlooker in the UAF camp muttered: "Can't they just send them to Australia?" as EDL supporters chanted: "We are the EDL."

A middle-aged woman chased after two EDL supporters who infiltrated the UAF side, shouting: "F*** off, go home, you f****** Nazis."

The woman was spoken to by police and the two men were herded away.

UAF demonstrators accused the police of protecting fascists after they were prevented from removing a barrier in Piccadilly Gardens.

Earlier police issued a stern message to troublemakers.

Chief Superintendent Gerry Donnellan, of Greater Manchester Police (GMP), said: "If people come to Manchester to protest they are legally entitled to do so.

"As soon as they step over the line between lawful protest then we will be taking positive action against those individuals.

"If you are going to come to Manchester and think you can get away with shouting racist, inflammatory remarks, you can expect us to respond."

EDL demonstrators planned to meet in Piccadilly Gardens at 5pm, with an address by an "expert speaker", followed by a two-minute silence for soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan. The national anthem was also going to be sung.

The organisation denies it is racist and insists in a statement on its website that it is a "multi-ethnic, multi-faith organisation".

Mr Donnellan said there would be a "significant spotting operation" for known troublemakers with back-up from CCTV.

Four men were arrested even before the demonstrations began.

Three were arrested in Manchester city centre on suspicion of public disorder and one on suspicion of possessing an offensive weapon.

One protester called Wayne, who had a Midlands accent, said: "We're only trying to say what we would be allowed to say if there was freedom of speech.

"There might be some troublemakers here but they only come out because they know we'd take a kicking otherwise."

    At least 10 injured too.

  28. Well, sounds to me like the EFL were pretty much a nonentity today. I followed the "tweets" on the Manchester Evening News website and the EDF were escorted off by the police to their Magic Buses (there's a company to boycott from now on) while the UAF demonstrators were allowed to make their own way back. Now I wonder why that would be? Maybe because the UAF are sensible people and the EDL are thugs and footy hooligans?

Anyhoo. I am concerned too about the b0ll0cks that is circulating about members of the UAF wearing t-shirts that diss 9/11 victims. I challenge any of the racist EDL eejits to provide just one photo - just one, I'm not being greedy here - of this as proof. No?

Well how about a nice cup of STFU then?

  34. Thanks to the Nazi salutes, racist abuse and unprovoked violence including throwing bottles, pieces of wood at people, and throwing coins at little kids, hoping to blind them, the EDL ahve proved themselves to be the very neo-Nazis they always say they are not.

There is no doubt about it now, and they will be hounded until one day they are all locked up safely in prison, and cannot persecute black, Asian people and immigrants.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The EDL came up with this Big Lie about 9/11 t-shirts to get back at the many photos of the nazi scum making Hitler salutes, but I was there and I didn't see a single such tshirt so I know that it's a lie, but the worry is, like the BNP's racial myths about asylum seekers going first in the housing queue, this evil myth needs to be officially debunked by Hope Not Hate, to stop it going any further.

There were no Islamic extremists at our march, and very few Asian people of any political persuasion, actually, so these lies are hardly believeable.

The fascist scum are really scraping the bottom of the barrel, and no wander we need a Myth Buster for Lancashire County Council with scumbags like Bev trying to get their revenge through these lies.

No doubt far right photoshoppers are trying to do their best to fabricate evidence, but all lies and myths perpetuated by the far right including their ultimate one, Holocaust denial, must be challenged now and forevermore, until all Nazis are locked up in jail!

    ReplyDelete
  36. The EDL are a a "multi-ethnic, multi-faith organisation" who not so secretly wants all mosques to shut down, and according to EDL fans on YouTube, desire all Muslims to be murdered in concentration camps following the example of their fop-Idol Adolf Hitler.

The Facebook friends of EDL supfremo Trevor Kelway, including Frank Atack, use Waffen SS logos on their profiles (uncovered by Eric The Fish), so burning swastikas just doesn't wash, don't you agree, Ketlan?

  48. Here's a couple of quotes from the EDL forum:

“Hope the report of 15 Muslims gettting there heads kicked in in a back alley is true”

“So where were they? Manchester has a high Muslim population with surrounding areas such as Bolton and Oldham having very high Muslim populations yet they didn't show.
Too scared to show up? Too stupid to realise that the EDL were going to be there? Got the location wrong and were instead waiting elsewhere for the EDL?”

...and there was me thinking that the EDL were supposedly against only extreme muslims. Seems not, judging from those two quotes. Methinks they are showing their true colours! They are against ALL muslims!

    ReplyDelete
