English Defence League Jewish division leader Roberta Moore quits

0 Comment (s)
The hardline activist at the forefront of the "Jewish Division" of the extreme right-wing English Defence League has announced that she does not wish to be a part of it any longer because of Nazi elements within it.

Roberta Moore, who has led the Jewish Division since it was launched more than a year ago, was accused earlier this month of being a divisive figure in the EDL. Ms Moore had attempted to co-ordinate her efforts with those of the far-right American Jewish Task Force, whose leader Victor Vancier has been imprisoned for terrorism offences. The move, in February, was heavily criticised by the EDL leadership.

In a statement which she posted on Facebook, the Brazilian-born Ms Moore said she had been offered work on "an international level" elsewhere and so had decided to step down from the Jewish Division. Although she described the EDL as "doing a fantastic job" she said the party had been hijacked by elements who wanted to use it "for their own Nazi purposes".

Ms Moore said she still supported the EDL leaders and "all the genuine patriots out there who struggle to get their voices heard" but added that she no longer wished to be a part of it.

"I sincerely hope that the leaders will get the strength to squash the Nazis within," she said.

Mark Gardner, from the Community Security Trust, said: "This latest development shows, yet again, why Jews should not be involved in such circles. They will destroy this movement if allowed to remain."

Professor, 80, fled from Nazi occupied Austria and championed Special Needs Education

0 Comment (s)
Peter Mittler, today a University of Manchester Professor
One of Britain’s most distinguished academics has revealed his remarkable escape from Nazi-occupied Austria as a young boy.

Peter Mittler, the 80-year-old Emeritus Professor of Special Needs Education at the University of Manchester, is one of the country’s great champions for the intellectually disabled and has advised the government and the United Nations. But as an eight-year-old Jewish boy in Vienna, his parents put him on the Kindertransport – the rescue mission which brought 10,000 children to Britain to escape Nazi persecution.

Prof Mittler has revealed his remarkable flight in a new memoir, Thinking Globally, Acting Locally: A Personal Journey. He tells how his oppression as a child in Hitler’s Austria led to his pioneering work for special needs education and a lifelong determination to fight injustice. And he expresses his eternal gratitude to Britain for taking him in.

“There were children of all ages on the train but there were also adults to look after us,” wrote Prof Mittler. “We were allowed a little carry-on bag and were given a label with a number and our name which the Germans inspected at the Dutch border – and that was the most frightening part. I remember sleeping in a bunk on the way to Harwich and discovering sheets and blankets for the first time – we only knew quilts in Austria. And they gave use bacon and eggs on the boat without understanding that many Jewish people wouldn’t be able to eat that. But the Kindertransport showed Britain at its best: they took 10,000 of us while the United States only took 1,000. I am forever grateful.”

In the months before Prof Mittler’s escape, Jews had their businesses looted, were banned from work and public places, and saw their children thrown out of school.

In his book, Prof Mittler recounts how a stormtrooper appeared at the family’s front door on April 2, 1938 – the day of his eighth birthday party – and ordered his mother to scrub the streets. She handed the man a ‘donation’ to be left alone. When he arrived in Britain, Prof Mittler was taken in by a family of strangers. He would not be reunited with his mother and father – a prominent anti-Nazi Socialist who made it over to work as a research chemist – until 1942.

Prof Mittler became head of Britain’s first research centre for special educational needs at The University of Manchester in 1968. It grew to become the largest of its kind in Europe. Prof Mittler said: “My own oppression led to a lifelong interest in fighting injustice and changing legislation to help people with disabilities.”

Poland: Secret Jewish heritage converts neo-Nazi

1 Comment (s)
Pawel sits in the synagogue learning the Torah, praying and getting advice from his rabbi. He appears to be enjoying a happy life married to his childhood sweetheart and the mother of his two children.

But he and Ola have traveled further than most -- from hate-filled neo-Nazism through the shock and anger of learning their heritage was Jewish to taking their place in the synagogue as Orthodox Jews.

They met at school in Poland's capital, Warsaw, when they were 12, but as their teen years passed Pawel first and then Ola grew into the neo-Nazi scene. At 18 they married and a few years later Ola was nagged by a conversation with her mother that she barely remembered -- something about Jewish roots.

She found her answer at the Jewish Historical Institute, which says it has collections documenting 10 centuries of Jewish experience in Poland. While there she said she felt compelled to also check Pawel's family history -- and he too came from a Jewish background.

"Something told me to... It was unbelievable -- it turned out that we had Jewish roots. It was a shock. I didn't expect to find out that I had a Jewish husband," she said. "I didn't know how to tell him. I loved him even if he was a punk or skinhead, if he beat people up or not. It was a time in Poland when this movement was very intense."

Reeling from the news, she had to return home to her neo-Nazi husband and tell him of their Jewish heritage.

There were 350,000 Jews in Poland after World War II -- about 10 percent of the Jewish population before the war. In the 25 years after WWII ended the overwhelming majority left to escape persecution by the Soviet-controlled government.

For those who stayed, their Jewish heritage was hidden often even from their own children. It provided a culture where anti-Semitism could thrive and in 1980s Poland, Pawel was embracing the hate festering in the concrete tower blocks of Warsaw.

When Ola brought home the documents to show Pawel his own history, he rushed to confront his parents, and they told him the family secret.

"I was a nationalist 100 percent. Back then when we were skinheads it was all about white power and I believed Poland was only for Poles. That Jews were the biggest plague and the worst evil of this world. At least in Poland it was thought this way as at the time anything that was bad was the fault of the Jews..." he said.

"Emotions, it is difficult to describe how I felt when I found out I was Jewish... my first thought was what am I going to tell people? What am I going to tell the boys? Should I admit it or not? I was angry, sad, scared, unsure."

Over time, Pawel's anger and confusion subsided and he approached Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich.

Speaking in the synagogue where he now worships, Pawel said: "The mirror was a big problem. I couldn't look at myself. I saw a Jew. I hated the person in the mirror then I grew accustomed to it, came to terms with it somehow. I came here to the rabbi and said, "listen, they are telling me I'm a Jew, I have this document in my hand, my mom and dad have said something. Who is this Jew and what is it? Help me because I am going to lose my mind otherwise.'"

In the years that followed they became friends with the chief rabbi and he has been a mentor to them.

Pawel, now 33, said: "I'm not saying that I don't have regrets but it's not something that I walk around and lash myself over... I feel sorry for those that I beat up... but I don't hold a grudge against myself. The people who I hurt can hold a grudge against me."

Today, they're active members of the Jewish community in Warsaw. Pawel is studying to work in a slaughterhouse killing animals according to the Jewish Kosher requirement and Ola is working in the synagogue's kitchen as a kosher supervisor."

Schudrich said: "The fact that they were skinheads actually increased the amount of respect I have for them. That they could've been where they were, understood that that was not the right way, then embraced rather than run away the fact that they were part of the people who they used to hate."

"I think also it says on a personal level, never write somebody off. Where they may be 10 years ago doesn't have to be where they are today. And the human being has this unlimited capability of changing and sometimes even for the better."

Lee Barnes talks bollocks again

26 Comment (s)
Yes, I know he always talks bollocks and that it's hardly original to have a go at the BNP's pet lunatic trainee lawyer, but on this occasion Barnes seems to have excelled himself. What has him foaming at the mouth on this occasion is the news that the Conservative Party has received a pile of readies from billionaire Alan Howard.

Actually, it's not such an enormous amount for the hedge-fund billionaire, considering that last year his charitable trust spent £1.6m on holocaust education and other bits and pieces - certainly less than £50,000 spread over more than two years - so we're wondering what all the fuss is about. If it ain't the money, presumably it's the fact that this particular billionaire is Jewish, which has annoyed Barnes so much that he has almost overdosed on the vitriol. The title of the piece says it all really.
'Zionist Capitalist Buys the Conservative Party'
Presumably, Barnes has to point out that Howard is Jewish to stop any anti-semitic waverers in the BNP moving to the Tories as they sense a Cameron victory in the offing at the General Election next year. We've heard on a number of occasions that Griffin and the band of idiots that run the party are getting increasingly nervous at the idea of the Conservatives forming a government, seeing a lot of the less ideologically sound recent intake of members defecting in droves to a party that might actually have some real power and that may have some idea of how to use it.

That the nerves are showing is clear. When agitated, Barnes does what all frightened idiots do - he starts hurling crude and almost incoherent abuse. For newer readers, it's worth bearing in mind that Lee Barnes is the acknowledged legal spokesman for the BNP, a party that claims it is the height of morality, integrity and sanity.
'Looks like the old whore Cameron will be dropping his britches, poking his arse into the air, smearing vaseline on his ring bit and then smiling whilst he takes it up the Gary Glitter for Israel.'
Lovely. We've had cause to note Barnes' deep interest in gay sex before and have naturally wondered if he is in fact gay. Not that we care but his party prefers to keep the gay imagery hidden away where it can't frighten the horses rather than posting it on a publicy-accessible blog. However, the ever-egomaniacal Barnes puts us right via a post in the comments section at Harry's Place.
'I prefer to remain distant sex god to the gayers, an everest yet to be climbed, an inaccesible icon of male sexuality, the source of constant lust to both sexes due to my unattainability.'
Yeah, whatever you say, Lee, you fruitloop.

Former mayor slams BNP

0 Comment (s)
A former Lord Mayor of Manchester has branded the BNP as the 'grandchildren of Hitler'.

Coun Afzal Khan says the British National Party share the same ideas as the Nazi Party, who persecuted Jews and many others before and during the Second World War. He was speaking at a meeting on 'community cohesion' at Manchester Jewish Museum on Cheetham Hill Road. The museum is near to where recent anti-terror raids resulted in 12 Pakistani nationals being arrested. They were later released without charge, but are facing deportation.

Coun Khan said: "The rise of the BNP to a level we have not seen for 30 years can strengthen the relationship between the Muslim and Jewish communities. All good, decent people are concerned about this, it is something we share. This is what the BNP are - the grandchildren of Hitler, they share the same ideas, forgetting all humans are the same.

"We all ultimately come from Africa and if you want to be blind to that, it is your problem. Both Jewish and Muslim communities have been victims of extremist elements. There may be political differences over Palestine and Israel, but there are hundreds of years of a strong relationship between the Muslim and Jewish communities. The issue of the BNP affects them both."

The meeting discussed improving relationships in Cheetham Hill, which is home to 23 separate racial groups - and 46 different dialects are spoken. Racist graffiti has recently been daubed on one of the pews at the museum, which is working at promoting tolerance. The meeting was attended by the MP for Blackley, Graham Stringer, as well as museum trustees and directors and curator Alex Grimes.

Director Stuart Hilton said: "Jewish people and the Irish have been in Manchester from the 1750s, so does it make those families not British? I was talking to someone in the Muslim community the other day whose family has lived here three generations. Does that not make them British? Our relations with our Muslim neighbours here are excellent and we believe we can work together to promote understanding of each other. There is a great deal of interaction, but I think the challenge for the future is moving from a state where we are in existence amicably next to each other, to where we cross over the boundary."

Hypocrisy, homophobia and lesbian BNP organiser Donna Hancock

11 Comment (s)
This article was submitted by one of our readers, Hexapla. We welcome any contributions from our supporters (as long as those contributions conform to the law and are in reasonably good taste). Please send your articles to us via email.

To add to its distasteful racism, anti-Semitism and residual anti-Catholicism, the BNP is an unequivocally homophobic party. The BNP views homosexuality in the same terms as it views the white working class: both are regarded as internal threats to the purity and strength of the White race and Britain. Given this, it is quite surprising to find married heterosexual and BNP Worcestershire Organiser Donna Hancock not only proclaim herself to be an open lesbian but that she intends to wed her girlfriend and take her to the BNP annual piss-up, the Red, White and Blue ‘festival’. If anything, Donna Hancock is making a big mistake and should brace herself for the inevitable backlash from the BNP rank-and-file.

The hypocrisy

Along with husband Lee Hancock (a BNP candidate), Donna Hancock operates the BNP blog, Worcestershire Nationalist. Despite Donna Hancock proclaiming herself as the BNP’s only open gay organiser, we find the following homophobic statements on the Worcestershire Nationalist blog directed at one of Britain’s leading anti-fascist activists, Denise Garside, herself an openly gay women (in addition to other homophobic writings):

the lesbian Garside”, “Garside a fucking dyke”, “LGPA (Lesbian and Gay Police Association) = Looks Good Patently Aesthetic

BNP Worcestershire Organiser Donna Hancock’s lesbian postings

Posting on the lesbian forum LoveGirls.co.uk (‘For girls who love girls’), Donna Hancock claims that not only can a lesbian be a raving fascist but that she also plans to take her girlfriend to the BNP’s Red, White and Blue festival:

Hi, this issue bugs me loads. I'm a political animal and when I inform others of this there is often an automatic assumption that because of my lesbian preferences my political leanings must be of a liberal or leftist persuasion. In fact my political views are what could be termed on the right if one uses arguably out-dated political mapping. Anyway, I am planning to attend the BNP's RWB (Red White and Blue festival) in Derbyshire in August. Bet my g/f and I will be the only gay women present (just like last year although we did not go around asking or advertising ourselves as such!!) but why should this be so? Gay women have a lot to offer and this applies across the political spectrum. Please join me in fighting against the political stereotyping of gay women! It's all hands on deck as we battle encroaching liberal-fascism!

Incredibly, Donna Hancock then tries to spin an image of the BNP as non-homophobic:

From what I can gather about BNP attitudes, there are no more homophobes in its ranks than in any other Party and actually, suprisingly enough to anyone who believes that a so-called far right Party would be anti-gay

As we show below, not only is Donna Hancock in denial over the BNP’s homophobia but is either a liar or overwhelmingly naive about the BNP. Donna Hancock goes on to regal us with the colours and styles of pubic hair that she and her girlfriend sport as well as the fascist-inspired tattoos she has on her genitals (she also says that “I am butch and I used to sign off my emails and texts 'the cock' (short form of my surname). Sort of gave it away I guess!”). Donna Hancock also tells us of her plan to wed her girlfriend, something, as detailed below, the BNP are definitely opposed to:

Can anyone recommend a lesbian-friendly wedding planner? I'm in the West Midlands but I suppose my big day could be arranged from a laptop in the Outer Hebrides if need be!

But, Donna Hancock then admits to fearing her family’s homophobia:

I don't think that some of my relatives have even sussed that I am a lesbian ... I can't help but feel sort of gagged as these people are my family and I don't want to fall out with them ... How on earth do you come out to your dearest relatives when you know that they will not accept it in a million years?

If Donna Hancock fears the reaction of her family, then she should defiantly fear the reaction of her fellow BNP members.

The BNP’s pure, unrefined homophobia

The BNP’s only elected member of the London Assembly, Richard Barnbrook, condemned homosexuality in the following terms:

There is a close analogy here with homosexuality. No one knows what causes some individuals to do what the majority of any healthy society places on a scale somewhere between distasteful and abhorrent, but some individuals will behave in that way whatever the bulk of popular opinion ... [in] the present circumstances where such "alternative lifestyle choices" are presented as valid – even superior – by the most powerful behavioural modification programme in human history

This homophobia has been translated in murderous violence. Former BNP member, David Copeland, bombed the Soho gay pub, Admiral Duncan, killing three people in a homophobic terrorist attack. David Copeland said his act was inspired by the BNP leadership. Readers can click on this link for a picture of David Copeland with master homophobe, BNP founder and leader John Tyndall. This is what BNP leader Nick Griffin said about the anti-gay Admiral Duncan bombing in the BNP’s then official magazine, Spearhead (June 1999):

TV footage of …gay demonstrators flaunting their perversion in front of journalists showed why so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive

David Copeland is not the only BNP-linked person to have carried out homophobic violence. In an April 2000 interview, BNP Thurrock organiser Dave Strickson boasted of attacking gays and lesbians in what he termed “queer-bashing” in Leicester Square. Further, BNP councillor Ian Meller was arrested as part of an armed fascist gang who attempted to attack a Gay Pride march in Leicester.

Writing in the BNP’s magazine, Identity (December 2003), BNP leader Nick Griffin denounced homosexuality as “form of behavioural deviancy”, “not a valid lifestyle choice” and “homosexuality is wrong” that “needs to be pushed humanely but firmly back into the closet”. Nick Griffin then issues this warning to gays and lesbians: if they continue to “press their aims further” there will be an “almighty backlash” which will result in the imprisonment of homosexuals in Britain. Nick Griffin has even advocated ways of criminalising gays and lesbians:

There's plenty of people making soap operas that present homosexuality as a wonderful lifestyle, which as a matter of fact it very often isn't .. So if you fined or even imprisoned a BBC filmmaker for breaching those laws, then it's not persecuting a homosexual necessarily, it's persecuting someone for breaking those laws

The BNP’s Director of Publicity (and former head of Young BNP) Mark Collett went on to call gay and lesbians: "AIDS Monkeys", "bum bandits" and "faggots" and said the idea of homosexuality was a "sickening thought". Also, that AIDS is a “friendly disease because blacks, drug users and gays have it”. Not surprisingly, a BNP spokesman told the gay newspaper PinkNews that:

Some unfortunate people suffer from homosexuality so we will just have to tolerate them. If I was one I would be ashamed and would remain celibate

The BNP’s founder John Tyndall in his official Dagenham by-election leaflet promised that the BNP would ban all funding to gay and lesbian groups. BNP London organiser Nick Eriksen even went on to claim that gays and lesbians attempt to convert heterosexuals to homosexuality:

"It therefore follows however that I do not approve of those who proselytise in favour of homosexuality or ‘homosexual rights’, or who parade proclaiming their homosexuality to the world"

The BNP’s website also carries the following homophobic policy:

On the other hand the BNP is not blinded or cowed by political correctness and recognises that homosexuality, which affects less than 2% of the population, is not the norm and that homosexual relationships do not produce offspring – essential to the survival of a people and a nation. We therefore believe in a policy of tolerance to all forms of adult sexuality, but homosexuality should not be promoted or encouraged. The BNP ... is opposed to the flaunting or celebrating of homosexuality which ‘civil partnerships’ represent. We believe that the government should adopt a more neutral position towards homosexuality rather than aiding and encouraging it by passing legislation specifically and solely designed to favour it

So, will Donna Hancock still persist in her myopic belief that the BNP will accept gay persons such as herself? When will she stop propagating the lie that the BNP can accept gays and lesbians? Is her hatred for non-Whites so overwhelming that she’s prepared to throw her lot in with an organisation that despises her too? Is this a turkey voting for Christmas?

Donna Hancock and her BNP husband Lee Hancock

The not so 'indigenous White' Donna Hancock and her Jewish roots

On the lesbian forum LoveGirls.co.uk, Donna Hancock admits to being East European Jewish in origin (not a good thing in the BNP) on her mother’s side:

Tell me about it! I'm jewish on my mother's side ... They even talk about 'nice jewish boys' they want to introduce me to. I hear them 'kvetching' (complaining) ... Oy vey! ... All I want is 'a maidel mit a klaidel'. (trad yiddish for a woman in a pretty dress). Gezundheit to all reading this!

Yet, posting on the Worcester News website, Donna Hancock gives the deliberate impression that she’s 100% White indigenous Briton when she writes:

As to who are the indigenous Britons: The most up to date genetic studies have shown that three quarters of all British people are direct descendants of the first inhabitants of the British Isles that came here at the end of the last Ice Age, around 13,000 years ago, from the Iberian Peninsula .. There were later invasions and less violent immigrations which left a small genetic signal but no individual event contributed even a tenth of our modern genetic mix. So we are in fact an extremely homogenous people and indeed the indigenous, aboriginal people of this land. And as such, we have just as much right to fight for our interests in our homeland as other indigenous people around the world are encouraged and applauded for doing

Donna Hancock dissimulation is further compounded by the following racist statement against Eastern Europeans on the Worcestershire Nationalist blog:

They [Eastern Europeans] may be White, my comrades, but they have a completely different culture. And the hardships they faced in their own countries make them opportunists in ours

One minority attacks another minority

Is Donna Hancock an inconsistent enigma? We ask this question because in the following posting on the Evening Standard website, Donna Hancock seems to be arguing for equal rights for non-White lesbians:

Ken has not done nearly enough for us gay women! Where are the gay women in prominent positions within the Labour Party, let alone in the canteens of London? And there are sizeable numbers of lesbians who happen to be BME [Black and Ethnic Minority] -where are the support network for gay BME women fleeing from prejudice within their communities? After all, there's lots of support for heterosexual women fleeing forced marriages! - Donna Hancock, UK

Yet, in a posting on the BNP’s website Donna Hancock rants against non-Whites as “the advancing dark hordes”:

I’ve always thought that the best way to destroy something is to take the p*** out of it. “The Life of Brian” did a lot to destroy Christianity. I never thought I’d hear myself saying this, but we’ve got to support Christianity against the advancing dark hordes because, in reality, what sounds better to you? The sound of church bells, or the sound of wailing Muslims? We’re talking about the destruction of 2,000 years of religious history here. Not to mention such places as Avebury and Stonehenge. These sites have a huge cultural significance to us all that outweigh any islamic prayers, because these sites are linked to the ancient gods of Europe. Our gods stem from the beliefs of the Germanic people, and the people that built these ancient sites are our people. Anyway, is it just me or does Rowan Williams look a bit/ a lot Satanic? :D

Donna Hancock in denial

Some BNP members claim that Donna Hancock is, like BNP deputy leader Simon Darby, a MI5 agent. It is pointed out that within a relatively short period of time Donna Hancock has been elevated to three senior positions within the BNP: BNP Worcestershire Organiser, the BNP’s national enquires team and the BNP’s membership team. But, we’ve got a more plausible explanation. As we all know, the BNP is renowned for a being a party of slavish political correctness. Indeed, the BNP proudly boasts of its equal opportunities program for marginalised minorities such as married heterosexual, part-Jewish and part-Eastern European lesbians such as Donna Hancock. The BNP must have stumbled across Donna Hancock when they read her post in which she complains about persons like her being grossly under-represented in British politics:

As a gay woman, I would like to know what Ken and Boris plan to do for me - lesbians are terribly under-represented in most fields. And why the stereotype of the left-wing butch dyke (although I'm proud to be a teensy bit butch). My girlfriend and I happen to be right of centre politically

Don’t worry Donna you’ll do fine in the BNP. It's full of misfits like you, so you should feel at home! You're a great advert for the BNP's much touted family values policy. We just hope that you were holding your girlfriend’s hand at the Red, White and Blue festival.

Disbelief as BNP enters by-election

6 Comment (s)
Residents of a diverse North London borough were shocked this week as a British National Party candidate stood in a local by-election.

The BNP’s Howard Studley is running for the position of councillor against four other candidates — including two Jews and a Muslim — in Canons ward, Harrow, on December 13. According to the 2001 census, Canons is 36 per cent Jewish and 23 per cent Asian and black. The election is being held after the death of Jewish Conservative councillor and former mayor Janet Cowan.

Gulab Gandhi of Canons Park Newsagent, said: “On this street there are businesses owned by Turkish, Irish, Armenian, Indian, Bangladeshi and Jewish people. I don’t think the BNP would win.”

His colleague Douglas Oxley added: “The BNP must be suicidal to stand here. Finding an ‘English’ person like me is very unusual. I think people will react with disbelief. I definitely won’t vote BNP.”

Local businessman Sailesh Solanki said: “I don’t think the BNP would win, but voter apathy allows them to get in more than anything else.”

Labour candidate and Belmont Synagogue member Richard Harrod told the JC: “What I fear is that not many people will vote, and BNP support will seem bigger than it really is. I want people to get out there and vote, it doesn’t matter for whom, as long as it’s not the BNP.”

Liberal Democrat candidate Anne Diamond — also a Belmont member — said: “I think if we had to place deposits, as with general elections, they [the BNP] would have second thoughts about fielding candidates. Perhaps they are trying to encourage those without political leanings to vote: there have been Jewish BNP candidates in the past. Perhaps they are trying to encourage Jews to become members.”

Conservative candidate Husain Akhtar said: “I think the BNP is just trying to demonstrate its presence. I am sure they won’t win. People in Harrow, especially in Canons ward, are very sensible and fair-minded people. I have confidence in people’s judgment to see what is in the best interest of Harrow.”

BNP press officer Simon Darby said: “Many Jewish people are not supporters of multiculturalism. We have at least one Jewish councillor and dozens of Jewish members, Sikh and Hindu, even one or two Muslim supporters. We are trying to contest as many elections as we can. Just because there are many Jews and Hindus in an area is no reason not to contest it. We are a mainstream phenomenon.”

Halloween horror of graffiti vandals

0 Comment (s)
Spray-can vandals spent Halloween night defacing a largely Jewish area.

Walls, fences and street signs in several roads in Radlett, Hertfordshire, were daubed with antisemitic graffiti. On the worst-affected road, The Drive, swastikas and slogans including “Fuck the Jews”, “I hate Jews” and “Die Packies [sic]” were painted on the Tarmac and pavements. The letters NF, BNP and KKK were also daubed and eggs were thrown at one house.

A 71-year-old man, who lives nearby but asked not to be named, said the graffiti had reduced him to tears. “I’m not Jewish, but I lived through the war and couldn’t understand then how man could do that to another man. Now I feel things haven’t changed. I’m appalled. It’s a close community here and we are all united over this.”

A 41-year-old mother-of-four, who also requested anonymity, said she believed those responsible came from outside Radlett “and targeted the area specifically because there are many Jewish people”.

She added: “It’s frightening because I have children and it’s not a good feeling when someone hates you. These weren’t brave people. They did it in the middle of the night and then ran.”

Other residents echoed their sentiments.

PC Suzan Loughran, a hate-crimes officer from Hertfordshire police, wrote to people who complained acknowledging that “the damage was clearly antisemitic and offensive and caused distress to many people”. She said CCTV images would be examined and a can retrieved at the scene would be tested for fingerprints.

Chief Inspector Mark Hunter said: “We are taking every course of action to trace those responsible. I want to reassure residents that incidents of this nature are rare in Hertfordshire. But they will not be tolerated.”

Jewish cemetery cleaned of Nazi symbols

0 Comment (s)
Poland's chief rabbi and a town mayor joined students cleaning gravestones Tuesday at a Jewish cemetery that vandals had desecrated with Nazi symbols.

Rabbi Michael Schudrich said that he and Tadeusz Wrona, mayor of the southern city of Czestochowa, joined about 20 Polish art students who spent two hours scrubbing black paint off some of 100 gravestones at the city's Jewish cemetery.

Police discovered Sunday that the letters SS, swastikas, and the slogan ''Jews Out'' were written on the gravetones in German. They are still searching for the culprits.

''The fact is, there is anti-Semitism everywhere. But what is also important is the reaction of the rest of society,'' Schudrich said. ''Too often the rest of society tolerates these things. But in this case, the mayor and the young people didn't sit at home and wait for someone else to come clean it up. They came out and made a physical - not just verbal - reaction.''

The group donned gloves and used strong chemicals to remove the oil-based paint. Due to the difficulty of removing the paint, and the risk of damaging inscriptions with the chemical, the efforts would have to be continued by professional cleaners, Schudrich said.

Poland was home to about 3.5 million Jews - Europe's largest Jewish community - until World War II, when most were killed by Nazi Germany. Today there are an estimated 30,000 Jews living in this predominantly Catholic country.

Jewish works found in Hitler's personal record collection

13 Comment (s)
Relatives of a Russian officer who looted Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler's Berlin bunker in 1945 have unearthed the Führer's personal record collection among his belongings.

What they found does not make sweet music to those who still worship the racial quackery of mankind's greatest tormentor. For amid the Wagner and the Beethoven, were works by Jewish and Russian composers - Hitler's greatest enemies - including Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Borodin.

Throughout the 12-year lifespan of the Third Reich, Hitler forbade his followers to listen to anything other than German composers. Even jazz was banned as "negro swamp music" and orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic were forbidden from playing anything other than Teutonic classics. The rest Hitler labelled "sub-human music"

Now the pillaged recordings, taken by a Red Army officer, Besymenski, after Berlin fell in May 1945, show that Hitler was a hypocrite as well as a monster.

Besymenski, himself a Jew, was fluent in German and conducted the interrogation of Field Marshal von Paulus after the Sixth Army was destroyed at Stalingrad in 1943. When Berlin fell, the Russian officer was despatched with others to make an inventory of artefacts in the bunker and Hitler's destroyed Reichschancellery above it.

While his comrades set about recording - and pilfering - the monogrammed silver and swastika-embossed porcelain, Captain Besymenski noticed that many cabinets had special locks and were still sealed.

Years later, he wrote these words: "They were all packed with paperwork indicating they were to be sent to the mountain retreat at Berchtesgaden. Among electrical appliances and things like washing machines, were the records."

According to Alexandra Besymenski, his daughter, her father kept the records as souvenirs and first showed them to her at the family dacha outside of Moscow in 1991. The much honoured history professor and lecturer at the Moscow Military Academy kept them in the loft at the dacha at Nikolina-Gora.

"I stumbled across them as I was looking for a football," his daughter Alexandra told Der Spiegel.

The family thinks that the Russian captain hid the records, which bear the stamp "Führer headquarters" across them, because he did not want to be thought of as a common looter.

Not that it was not common practice for the Soviet military elite to take home the spoils of a war that cost 26 million Russian lives: Marschall Zhukov, the victor of Stalingrad and Berlin, took home 55 classical oil paintings, seven boxes of valuable porcelain and silverware, nine gold watches and 713 silver ornaments pilfered from the castles of Potsdam.

But the records were both a sense of shame and pride for the music-loving Besymenski who died two months ago, aged 86. During his life, he played them for himself and a small clique of trusted friends.

Now Alexandra has revealed the story of how Adolf Hitler's record collection came to be in the hands of his sworn enemy.

The usual Hitler favourites are there; Beethoven's rousing Ninth Symphony, the Flying Dutchman by Wagner, several works by Brahms, Schumann and Mozart.

But the discovery of the recordings of Russians and Jews show that Hitler did not practice what he preached to his people. There are works featuring prominent Jewish soloists, including Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman and the voice of Russian baritone Fyodor Shalyapin on a recording of Mussorgsky's Death of Boris Godunov.

Many of the records are scratched, indicating they were played over and over again while the war that Hitler began cost millions of lives across Europe and the wider world.

"I think my father found it astonishing that millions of Jews and Russians had to die because of the ideology of Hitler and here he was all the time enjoying their art," said Alexandra.

Alexandra said will make a decision over what to do with the collection of several hundred records in the coming months.

York man’s BNP leaflets anger

0 Comment (s)
An outraged resident has hit out after receiving leaflets from the British National Party attacking the Archbishop of York.

Peter Golding, 38, of Sovereign Park, Acomb, York, says he has received various leaflets from the British National Party (BNP) despite asking them not to post their "bigotry" through his door. The latest leaflet thanks the 520 people in Acomb who voted for BNP candidate Ian Dawson and criticises the Archbishop, Dr John Sentamu, for urging people not to vote for the party.

The Press reported in early May how the Archbishop had placed an advert before the local elections which urged people to use their vote wisely. He wrote: "Jesus warned us to be wary of wolves who come in sheep's clothing. They come with honeycombed words, promising a New England, and a land of milk and honey. My hope is that as you cast your vote on Thursday you do so with your eyes wide open so that our city does not sleepwalk into a wall of hate."

The new BNP leaflet speaks of what the party faced in the run up to the election including an "incoherent attack from someone who was born in Uganda yet feels the urge to TELL local people who were born and bred in York who not to vote for".

Mr Golding said: "I've told them I don't want them, but they keep delivering them to me. I don't want this kind of fascist propaganda through my door. They are attacking the Archbishop, but they don't name him or give his title. Yet on the front it says The Year of Our Lord 2007'. Are they purporting to be Christians?"

He added: "I have great respect for the Archbishop of York, he challenges people like the BNP who basically attack communities. In York we have a very small ethnic community which has increased recently, but I feel it's for the benefit of York. We have the university, we have people coming from all over the world, and there is nothing but a benefit in that."

He also claimed the BNP had refused to talk about their policies with voters.

"They don't knock on the door like other political parties, they leaflet and then run. You have to run after them in the street, they are not willing to discuss issues. I was part of a 'Marxist, Jewish conspiracy of world domination' because I said I was a trades unionist. If they could tell me what that means I would love to know."

As well as the Archbishop, The Press was also attacked by the BNP, which claimed the paper used "bullying tactics" during the local elections in trying to "dissuade people from voting for the BNP at every opportunity".

Bishops and Muslims at Jewish burial

One of Manchester Jewry's greatest communal activists has died

Henry Guterman, 82, who continued his manifold communal engagements until just before he was admitted to Wythenshawe Hospital with a severe stroke two weeks ago, left Berlin for Manchester with his family after Kristallnacht.

Mr Guterman's father Berthold Guterman had been a great Anglophile since he spent some time in London as an apprentice before World War I. Even though Berthold was interned as an enemy alien for some time in Britain, his grandson and Henry's cousin David Goodman recalled: "He thought England was a bastion of moderation and liberal democracy."

So when the Nazi threat began to loom, Berthold, a soap manufacturer, cultivated his relationship with the owner of the Cussons soap factory in Kersal, Salford.

Even though the large extended Guterman family was well established in Berlin, from its spacious home in a central area of the city, it was able to witness the rise of Nazism as Hitler paraded through nearby streets. After Kristallnacht, during which time 12-year-old Henry was in hospital for a routine operation and when many of their relatives disappeared, Berthold decided to move his family to Manchester where he became a managing director. Having already invented the first floating soap, in Kersal Berthold was responsible for the production of the famous Imperial Leather brand.

The Gutermans set up home in West Didsbury from where Henry celebrated his barmitzvah at South Manchester Synagogue. The family later moved to the White House, Northenden, which David described as a "virtual Berlin where there was high tea with German cakes and German books on the shelves. It was like a recreation of life in Germany".

But, like his father, Henry was a great admirer of Britain. His son Mark said: "He always felt he had to give something back to the country which had accepted him as an immigrant."

The sight at his funeral last Friday of bishops, side by side with Hindus and Muslims wearing yarmulkes, bears full testimony to the fact that he certainly repaid his debt more than in full.

New Manchester Jewish Representative Council president Barbara Goldstone said: "I will have to find more than five people to do what Henry did."

The list of Mr Guterman's communal positions within and without the community fills a third of a page in the Jewish Year Book. Besides being a former Manchester Jewish Rep Council president and chairman of the Board of Deputies defence and public relations committee, Mr Guterman was extremely active in South Manchester Synagogue, the Zionist Central Council, the North Manchester Jewish Youth Project, Morris Feinmann Homes, Heathlands and Outreach.

He was at the helm of most of Manchester's interfaith groups, including the Muslim Jewish Forum and Indian Jewish Association and Council of Christians and Jews, as well as having been instrumental in founding the Black Jewish Forum. He represented the Jewish community on the Manchester and Trafford Standing Advisory Councils for Religious Education, as well as on the Manchester Council of Community Relations, the North Manchester Crime Prevention Committee and Disabled Living.

Having dedicated his life to making sure the Holocaust never recurs, in recent years Mr Guterman, who received an MBE for his communal endeavours, was particularly active in fighting the BNP through Unite Against Fascism for which he toured the country on speaking engagements. He also fought Israel's corner in his relations with Christian and Muslim organisations.

Son Mark said of his father, who was a retired raincoat and handbag manufacturer: "He was never motivated by money but by what he could give. I remember that in the 1970s, he deliberately employed a black man in order to make a stand against racism."

And Henry was never afraid to make a stand, whether in support of Far Eastern asylum seekers in danger of deportation or his public support for controversial London Mayor Ken Livingstone. But although Henry was a passionate advocate for peace he was not afraid to fight Israel's corner in his relations with the Muslim Council of Britain and pro-Palestinian Christians.

He is survived by his children Mark, Robert of London and Emma Morris and seven grandchildren.

Henry Guterman was a highly valued member of the Zionist Central Council's executive, writes president Lucille Cohen.

He worked tirelessly for the Jewish community as a former president of the Manchester Jewish Representative Council and, following his attendance among a ZCC contingent at a World Zionist Organisation Israel advocacy course in Jerusalem, also became an equally tireless and fearless advocate for Israel.

Henry displayed his passion for Israel and his capability of defending it to dramatic and best effect when he debated in a statesmanlike manner against the pro-Palestinian Sabeel protagonist, the Rev Steven Sizer, at Chester Cathedral.

Having fled Nazi Berlin as a young refugee in the late 1930s, Henry was acutely aware of the dangers of antisemitism and fascism and devoted much of his life in a variety of roles to the battle against these twin forces of evil.

In recognition of the need for improved interfaith relations and dialogue as a means of avoiding discordance between the different faith and ethnic communities in this country, he became vice-chairman of the Manchester branch of the Council of Christians and Jews and set up the Muslim-Jewish Forum with a former Manchester Lord Mayor.

Henry Guterman, president of the Jewish Representative Council from 1986 to 1989, was a wonderful man who devoted his whole life to fighting fascism and racism, writes Barbara Goldstone, president.

He was respected and admired by all. His main aim in life was creating peace, harmony and tolerance among different faiths and demonstrating that all people have a place on this earth. A true gentleman, his unique ability to play an important part at every meeting he attended will be an impossible act to follow.

His passing has left a huge void in the Jewish Representative Council and indeed the whole community.

Pledge is broken as 'Nazis' march again

1 Comment (s)
War nostalgia enthusiasts have broken their promise never to dress again as Nazi officers . . . for a SECOND time

And their outrageous antics have drawn strong criticism from Holocaust survivors and Jewish community leaders.

The annual War Weekend took place last weekend at restored railway stations in Bury and Ramsbottom. But participants broke a pledge once more, strutting about in German uniforms at the war re-enactment events.

However, the chairman of the East Lancashire Light Railway, Peter Duncan, who organised the event, said they banned anybody from dressing up as SS officers. He told the Jewish Telegraph: "I honestly don't believe that Holocaust survivors could be offended by the sight of a swastika. We banned guests from wearing SS uniforms, but not German uniforms. If you're going to have someone wearing a German uniform from the Second World War, then it is going to have a swastika insignia."

Councillors Michelle Wiseman and Peter Redstone told the Jewish Telegraph they were assured by the organisers that SS and Gestapo uniforms would be banned.

Pilkington Park representative Mr Redstone said: "It is disappointing that people have once again decided to wear Nazi uniforms. I'm sure that they'll bring back horrific memories for Holocaust survivors."

Holocaust survivor Meyer Hersh, of Whitefield, said any right-minded person would find the uniforms offensive.

Polish-born Mr Hersh, who spent 18 months in Auschwitz, fumed: "Swastikas are symbols of hatred and German uniforms should be banned from this event totally. The very sight of them can bring back the most horrific memories for survivors and it seems to me that they are glorifying the Germans."

But the railway's marketing director Graham Vevers said that they made it perfectly clear it would not be acceptable for guests to dress up in SS uniforms.

"However, we did notice that some people were wearing certain German uniforms and we asked them not to wear them again," he added.

Far-right party set to make gains in UK local elections

0 Comment (s)
The British National Party (BNP) is set to field its largest-ever list of candidates in local elections across the UK next month. In response, the Board of Deputies of British Jews has asked expatriates living in Israel to vote.

The organization sent an "urgent call" to register to vote by April 18 to help prevent the BNP from increasing its influence.

"In light of the BNP's current push to field a record number of candidates in upcoming local elections in England, as well as those being held for the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly, it is imperative that we urge our constituents to register in time to vote," the board said in an e-mail sent to organizations and individuals in Israel.

Jewish community leaders and politicians have expressed concern over the far-right party's plans to field 821 candidates. The BNP hopes to increase its representation from 49 councillors to 90.

According to Henry Grunwald, president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, "Any gains in the party's popularity damage society as a whole by stirring up communities and undermining the values of tolerance that have allowed the Jewish community and other minorities to flourish in Britain."

"Holocaust denial and Jewish conspiracy theories remain core elements of the BNP's ideology," he said.

The BNP is targeting several key councils that have a sizable Jewish population. It is contesting 32 seats in the Scottish Parliament, seven in the Scottish local councils and 20 in the Welsh Assembly.

"This shows that, where the BNP is concerned, there can never be any room for complacency," said Labor MP John Mann, chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Anti-Semitism. "The BNP represents a very real threat to all of Britain's communities, and it is vital that voters give them a message at the coming elections that the politics of race hate will not be tolerated in Britain."

A spokesman for the Community Security Trust said: "This continues the worrying trend of increasing BNP activity in recent years. They are still very much an extremist party and a divisive influence on local communities, despite their attempts to hide their anti-Semitism and racism."

A BNP spokesman predicted that "vast areas of the country will see a BNP candidate for the very first time."

"This is a tremendous testimony to the spectacular growth the BNP has witnessed over the last year," he said.

Phill Edwards, media spokesman for the BNP, told The Jerusalem Post: "The BNP is a party that campaigns for British values, which include freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom to discriminate if you want to - a fundamental human right - and to preserve the traditional culture and identity of Britain. I admire the Jews for having this social cohesive society and applaud them for that," he said. "I wish our white folk were the same. We are trying to do to our people is what the Jews do for their people."

Asked if his party posed a threat to the Jewish community, Edwards said: "Find out what the true message of the BNP is. Look through all the propaganda from the people who like to tell lies about us being fascists, which we are not. The problem in this country is the debate has been dishonest. People never debate our policies. People, Jews and gentiles, have all been brainwashed by the media - the BBC, the Guardian and the left-wing press in particular - that we are something we are not, and it will take a long time to change this and for people to overcome this. Have a look at our manifesto. There are no threats to anyone on it. We have nothing to do with fascism or Nazism"

Edwards said the BNP wanted restrictions on immigration.

"We are threatened by mass immigration, even by places like Poland," he said. "They are of the same race as the British but are a foreign culture, and it's destroying our native culture. This is why we want the numbers restricting. The problem lies when the numbers are becoming so great that our culture and identity is being changed. If you're a white person, or Jewish of white European ancestry, then I'd support the BNP, as no other party is going to preserve this British culture and identity," Edwards said.

He called Muslims a "big threat" and denounced the Respect Party of George Galloway, who, he said, was "encouraging Islam in this country."

"I would worry about the establishment parties who are doing nothing to prevent the Islamification of Britain," Edwards said. "If I was a Jew I would be worried. The Muslims are the ones going on about Holocaust denial. The rise in anti-Semitism isn't with the British, it's with the Muslims."

Asked about the accusation that the BNP has Holocaust deniers, Edwards said: "The Holocaust is a thing that happened 70 or so years ago in Eastern Europe. It's not our thing. It's nothing to do with the BNP and we have no comment on it.

"It's a terrible thing and we're sorry about what happened, but we didn't do it. It is being used by Jewish pressure groups to stop people criticizing multiracial Britain, and I think it's an abuse. I'm not denying it; we have no view on it."

"I don't know what the details are," he added. "I know something bad happened; I have no knowledge on it. When I was a kid in school in the 1950s there was nothing said about the Holocaust. It's only in the last 20 years it's got more and more in the media. I know something bad happened, and we don't want to make political capital out of it."

Use votes to keep BNP out

0 Comment (s)
The British National Party is standing in the heart of the Jewish community in local elections on May 3. In Alwoodley, Conservative candidate Cllr Ruth Feldman takes on BNP nominee Christine Whitaker.

Back in 2004, the BNP made little impact but Cllr Feldman is not being complacent despite the Alwoodley ward not being classed as 'at risk'. Cllr Feldman said: "The BNP tries to give the impression that it has changed its spots and no longer is a racist party. The Jewish community remembers well its past history and is not taken in by this deception. It is necessary for the members of the Jewish community to do their duty and vote for the democratic party which meets their interests."

Aside from the Alwoodley ward other Jewish councillors facing BNP opposition are Labour candidate Alex Sobel (Roundhay), UK Independence Party candidate Jeff Miles (Moortown) and Liberal Democrat candidate Sadie Fisher (Killingbeck Seacroft).

Mr Sobel has fought against the BNP in Leeds and throughout the country for a decade. He said: "I am saddened that they have been able to stand a candidate right in the heart of North East Leeds. I hope the community in Roundhay and throughout Leeds gets out and votes so that they can make no further gains."

Sue Dorsey, Leeds Jewish Representative Council, president added: "News that 33 BNP candidates are standing in the Leeds local elections must be of the great concern to the whole Jewish community. There is no room in British Society for racism and prejudice. The Jewish people have suffered so much throughout the ages, but we now have the power of the vote, which we must all use in May. The equation is simple, every vote for a mainstream party means one less vote for the BNP."

In a worrying trend the British National Party has announced a record number of candidates - 880 as opposed to only 363 last year and a mere 53, 10 years ago. In the Yorkshire and Humberside area BNP is fielding 183 candidates including 33 in Leeds, 17 in Bradford, 16 in Harrogate, 10 in York, seven in Sheffield and three in Hull.

Last May, the British National Party claimed one seat in Leeds.

Cllr Mark Harris (Liberal Democrat) said: "The fact that the BNP are standing in every ward ought to tell us exactly what is going on. This is not flash in the pan stuff. They are confidently starting to use the democratic process to get what they want."

Cllr Keith Wakefield (Labour) said: "We do not want the BNP's form of poison and extremism in our city. People need to be aware that the BNP may now dress in smart suits and wear ties but the message of hatred is still the same."

Cllr Andrew Carter (Conservative) said: "It is a wake up call to all the major parties, particularly nationally. The threat of the BNP must be resisted and exposed for what it is."

Commenting on BNP growth nationally, Board of Deputies president Henry Grunwald said: "This development demonstrates once again the danger of complacency when it comes to the far right. Holocaust denial and Jewish conspiracy theories remain core elements of the BNP's ideology. Any gains in the party's popularity damage society as a whole by stirring up tensions between communities and undermining the values of tolerance that have allowed the Jewish community, and other minorities, to flourish in Britain. Most importantly, this is a wake up call for us to work with other communities in making sure that we get out the vote to oppose the BNP."

Le Pen's mask slips as he plays the race card against Sarkozy

0 Comment (s)
The candidate who claims to be closest to the people rarely leaves his office, except to go to the radio or TV studio. The candidate who promises never to lie to the electorate refuses to say what he would do if elected.

Jean-Marie Le Pen, 78, is the "invisible man" of the French presidential campaign: invisible but ever-present, like a virus. He began the campaign pretending to be a more mellow, and more tolerant, man. But in his latest broadcast appearance - he seldom appears in public - the veteran far-right leader reverted to his favourite theme: xenophobia.

The front-running, centre-right candidate, Nicolas Sarkozy, "comes from an immigrant background," Mr Le Pen told a radio interviewer on Sunday. By comparison, he, Mr Le Pen, was a candidate of the terroir: literally, a candidate rooted in the native earth.

"It's obvious, there's a difference," Mr Le Pen said. "There is a choice there which might be considered fundamental by a certain number of French people".

This is Jean-Marie Le Pen at his most poisonous and his most plausible - and also his most effective.

Mr Sarkozy, 52, the man who is favourite to be the next President of France, is indeed half-Hungarian and a quarter-jewish on his maternal, French side. He does not look particularly French; his name does not sound French. Ask almost anyone in France if this will make a difference to their choice in the presidential election on 22 April and 6 May and they will say "no". Mr Le Pen knows, however, that it does make a difference, for a significant minority of French people, especially people on the hard right, tempted to vote for Mr Sarkozy.

Mr Le Pen, and he alone, has been prepared to break the taboo and make a public issue of Mr Sarkozy's Hungarian and Jewish blood. When challenged - as he knew he would be - he immediately pointed out that Mr Sarkozy had himself boasted of his immigrant background during the campaign. If Mr Sarkozy had not mentioned his family, Mr Le Pen said, he would not have mentioned it either.

At 78, fighting his fifth - and presumably last - presidential campaign, Mr Le Pen has lost none of his tactical brilliance or his moral cynicism. He knows, better than anyone, how to touch the buttons of inchoate anger and xenophobia.

Although placed fourth by the polls, Mr Le Pen insists that a "tsunami" of "rejection of the system" will carry him into the crucial top two places in the first round on 22 April. Can he repeat his extraordinary coup of 2002 and reach the second round?

Mr Le Pen has been creeping up in the opinion polls, to around 13 or 14 per cent. Last time he knocked out the Socialist prime minister, Lionel Jospin, with just under 17 per cent. There are two candidates ahead of him this year: the unconvincing Socialist, Ségolène Royal, and the likeable but undynamic centrist François Bayrou.

Mr Le Pen predicts that they will cancel one another out, and he will dart between them, with about 20 per cent of the vote, and reach the second round.

There are a number of reasons to believe that Mr Le Pen will fail. First, he has never scored more than 18 per cent in a national election. Second, he is an old man and beginning to look his age. (His decision barely to go on the road is partly strategic but may also be intended to conserve his flagging energy.)

Finally, he has a candidate running against him this time - Mr Sarkozy - who has stolen and moderated many of his favourite issues: immigration, insecurity, excessive taxation and nationalism.

Another shock cannot not be ruled out, however. Mr Le Pen predicts that somewhere around 5 per cent of the 30 per cent of voters now supporting Mr Sarkozy will return to the far right on 22 April. Hence his decision to make Mr Sarkozy's Hungarian - and implicitly his Jewish - blood an election issue.

And there is a further complication. Pollsters in France have never managed accurately to gauge Mr Le Pen's support. Le Pen voters systematically lie. This year his electorate is even harder to plumb than ever.

An unknown but significant minority of far left voters - and even Arab and African - voters say they are tempted to vote Le Pen this time out of bloody-mindedness, frustration or determination to "make the system explode". Last fling or not, Mr Le Pen may have one shot left in his locker.

Jewish leader pushes on nazi archive

0 Comment (s)
A Jewish leader who survived the Holocaust as a boy by hiding in basements and attics urged countries on Wednesday to speed the opening of millions of files on Nazi concentration camps and their victims.

Leo Rechter, president of the U.S.-based National Association of Jewish Child Holocaust Survivors, told Congress that Nazi war records stored in Bad Arolsen, Germany, should be opened urgently for a dying generation of survivors.

'Of all the public archives in the world, what possible justification can there be to prevent us from learning the truth about what happened to our families during the Holocaust?' he asked, according to testimony prepared for delivery to the House Foreign Affairs Committee's Europe subcommittee.

Rechter, an Austrian Jew whose family fled to Belgium and survived the Nazi occupation after his father was deported and murdered in Auschwitz, spoke at a hearing aimed at stepping up pressure on an 11-nation body that oversees the secret Nazi archive. Wednesday's hearing follows the approval by a House panel Tuesday of a resolution urging the countries to speed up ratification of plans to open the archive to researchers.

This month, the nations overseeing the archive set procedures in motion to open the records by the end of the year. Before the material can be accessed, all member countries must ratify an agreement adopted last year to end the 60-year ban on using the files for research.

The Associated Press, which has been granted extensive access to the archive in recent months on condition that victims are not fully identified, has drawn attention to the importance of the documents.

Witnesses testifying Wednesday expressed frustration that the commission has waited so long to release the files.

'We survivors cannot understand why the world powers would have made a conscious decision to withhold all of the facts about our history from us,' said David Schaecter, president of the Holocaust Survivors Foundation.

Some expressed incredulity that the release still faces diplomatic negotiations for final ratification.

'The timetable for this project is not a diplomatic timetable,'' said Paul Shapiro, director of the Washington Museum's Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies. ``Every month of additional delay means more survivors gone - an irreversible benchmark of the consequence of delay.'

The State Department said Wednesday that Britain recently joined the U.S., Israel, Poland and the Netherlands in completing ratification. Germany and Luxembourg have said they would ratify before the commission meets again in May. The positions of France, Belgium, Italy and Greece were unclear.

German is charged with denying Holocaust

0 Comment (s)
German prosecutors on Tuesday charged the former lawyer for a far-right activist with incitement, accusing her of denying the Holocaust and ending one of her legal filings with "Heil Hitler."

Sylvia Stolz represented Ernst Zundel in his first trial, which collapsed after Stolz was banned from proceedings on grounds she was trying to sabotage the proceedings. Zundel's second trial at the Mannheim state court ended last month with his conviction for incitement for denying the Holocaust. The 67-year-old, who was deported from Canada in 2005 and also once lived in Tennessee, was sentenced to the maximum five years in prison.

Mannheim prosecutors said in a statement that Stolz herself has now been charged with incitement, attempting to thwart a prosecution and using symbols of a banned organization. During Zundel's trial, Stolz repeatedly disputed the Nazis' mass murder of Jews, called for hatred of the Jewish population and ended a legal document with the words "Heil Hitler," the statement said. The document was freely accessible on the Internet, it added.

Stolz does not deny making the statements or writing "Heil Hitler" on the document. However, she told The Associated Press in a telephone interview that while she anticipated she might be charged, it was part of her fight against what she considers an illegitimate government built upon the postwar allied occupation of Germany.

"We are under foreign occupation, and this foreign occupation has portrayed Adolf Hitler as a devil for 60 years, but that is not true," she said. "But the real truth can only be told when someone attempts to break this taboo."

Stolz is also accused of trying to "force an end to the proceedings" with constant interventions and "provocations" that disturbed the conduct of the trial.

The presiding judge halted Zundel's trial last March to ask for Stolz's removal after she denounced the court as a "tool of foreign domination" and described the Jews as an "enemy people." In April, she was carried out of the court room, shouting "Resistance! The German people are rising up," after defying an order for her removal.

Prosecutors said they are seeking a ban on Stolz working as a lawyer.
