EDL thug who abused police at Telford protest faces £685 bill

An English Defence League supporter who chanted ‘You’re not English any more’ at a police officer during a protest in Telford has been convicted of using threatening behaviour.

Myles Bradley Davies, 19, of Melton Mews, Whitchurch, had denied using words or behaviour likely to cause alarm or distress in Wellington on August 13, but he was found guilty after a trial at Telford magistrates court.

He was fined £50 and ordered to pay £620 costs and a £15 victim surcharge. Magistrates took no action on a breach of a conditional discharge imposed for an offence of assault causing actual bodily harm, also in August.

The court yesterday heard that Davies had been on the Shrewsbury-bound platform at Wellington railway station after attending an EDL march.

After a disturbance broke out between EDL supporters and police on the opposite platform, Davies crossed the station bridge and tried to get onto the platform.

Davies admitted he had directed a chant of ‘You’re not English any more’ at a police officer in front of him.

Mr Steve Scully, for Davies, had argued that there was no case to answer because the only people on the station were EDL supporters and police officers, and they would not have been alarmed or distressed.

EDL members gather in Church Street, Wellington, for their protest
The cost of policing the English Defence League (EDL) protest in Wellington was almost £350,000, it was revealed this afternoon.

The figures, detailed in a report to go before West Mercia Police Authority tonight, show £300,000 was spent on additional resources from other forces.

Police chiefs say Operation Crown on August 13 was a success despite the major disruption it caused.
