Standing up to fascism
A celebration of the 43 Group, who fought fascismin postwar Britain, and those who fight fascism today
The 43 Group consisted of Jewish ex-servicemen and women who stood shoulder to shoulder with non-Jews to halt Oswald Mosley’s attempt to revitalise a fascist movement in postwar Britain.
Between 1946 and 1952 they combined intelligence gathering and street fighting to drive Mosley’s thugs from our streets. In 1948 many supporters of the 43 Group volunteered for MAHAL.
A decade later old 43 Group members and a younger generation formed a new group that fought fascism using similar tactics. The 1962 Committee, better known as the 62 Group, carried on an intelligence-led battle against the remnants of Mosley’s Union Movement, the original British National Party, Colin Jordan’s National Socialist Movement and the emerging National Front.
The internationally famous Searchlight magazine and its campaigning, research and educational arms arose out of this struggle.
And today’s Jewish Community Security Trust grew from these roots, learning from those who had led in earlier years.
Today the largest ever anti-fascist campaign in Britain, HOPE not hate, works together with many of these veterans to defeat the British National Party and defend democracy.
You can meet the veterans of the 43 and 62 Groups and MAHAL, and today’s activists at an evening event on Sunday 15 February. The programme includes short talks, a film about the 43 Group narrated by the late Harold Pinter, an exhibition of unique material, a bookstall with most items free and refreshments.
Bring your family and especially the next generation to an event that will help them hold up their heads in today’s troubled times.

BNP councillor's democracy vow
A BNP councillor has vowed to put his personal views aside and follow the democratic process despite telling the Review he would stand against Markyate Parish Council over an equality policy.
Simon Deacon, BNP councillor and former leading National Front activist, still holds the view that an equal opportunities policy is a “waste of time”. But he has promised to abide by it after the council democratically voted to support it.
He said: “I’m totally against it because of the heavy flaws in it, but I will abide by it because it was a democratic vote.”
The council was hit with complaints after Councillor Deacon made comments slamming the policy in the Review on July 2. He branded the policy “unfair” and vowed not to support it.
In a letter to the council, read out at a council meeting last Tuesday night, anti-BNP campaigners urged Mr Deacon to put on record whether or not he supported the policy. Speaking after the meeting at Markyate Parish Hall, a BNP protestor who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “Either he votes against it or he supports it. If he votes against it, should he be a member of a council that is signed up to that policy?”
Despite the backlash from campaigners over his comments, Councillor Deacon still strongly objects to the policy.
He continued: “If you have been a member or ex-member of the BNP or a known supporter or activist in anyway it is against the law to join the Metropolitan Police. To me that’s discrimination, but the equal opportunities act doesn’t cover that sort of discrimination? Everybody is complaining about me, but nobody is shouting from the roof tops that BNP members are discriminated against in everyday life.”
He added: “Everyone in this country should have the right to say what they want, the problem is we are having that right taken away from us.”

European nationalists to form new right-wing party
Ultra-conservative factions inside Europe are reuniting to form a new right-wing party. The new party, known currently as the “European Freedom Party” or the “European Patriotic Party,” is coming together under an anti-immigration, anti-Islamization banner.
The leaders of ultra-conservative parties in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria and France announced in Vienna on Friday that they are in talks with several countries and hope to obtain as broad support as possible. EU law requires a European political party to have a minimum of members from seven states.
“Our goal is clear, we want more than 10 parties as members and ideally one party from each EU country,” Austria’s Freedom Party leader, Heinz-Christian Strache, told journalists.
“We say: Patriots of all the countries of Europe, unite! Because only together will we solve our problems,” he said, adding that “irresponsible mass immigration” was one of Europe’s main problems.
Supporters hope to launch the new party by November 15.
That date comes almost exactly one year after the demise of the Identity, Tradition, Sovereignty (its) European parliamentary group Nov. 14, 2007. The bloc collapsed a week after Italian mep Alessandra Mussolini, the granddaughter of fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, told a newspaper, “breaking the law has become a way of life for Romanians” (BBC News, Nov. 14, 2007). Romanians, who contributed five members to its, promptly withdrew from the party, putting it under the 20-member limit for a European parliamentary group.

The head of the Greater Romania party has been accused of xenophobia and anti-Semitism, and the predecessor to the Flemish Interest party, the Flemish Block, shut down when it was declared a racist organization by Belgium’s highest court. Austria’s Freedom Party is the former home of the infamous Jörg Haider, and the Attack Coalition seeks a “mono-ethnic” Bulgaria and has been accused of racism (ibid., Jan. 12, 2007).
Although its is defunct and the new party is small and looked upon with disdain by Europe’s mainstream, ultra-conservatives with extreme views like these will always find a home in the halls of European power.
When crisis strikes Europe and its leading nation, Germany—particularly if it is directly or indirectly related to non-indigenous threats like Islamist extremism—watch for Europe to unite quickly and for far-right sentiment to become more mainstream.
