Student murder charge man in court

A man calling himself "Psycho" is to appear before a Crown Court judge accused of the Boxing Day murder of Indian student Anuj Bidve.

Kiaran Stapleton, 20, from Ordsall, Salford, replied "Psycho Stapleton" when asked to give his name as he stood in the dock at City of Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday. He was remanded in custody overnight to appear at Manchester Crown Court on Tuesday. Stapleton was arrested last Thursday and charged with Mr Bidve's murder on Sunday.

Mr Bidve, 23, described as a "promising and clever" student, was shot once in the head at around 1.30am on December 26. He died a short time later in hospital. He was with a group of fellow Indian students visiting Manchester for Christmas when he was murdered as the group walked through the Ordsall district of Salford, heading for Manchester city centre.

The apparently motiveless killing has generated national and international shock, especially in the victim's home country.

Two officers from Greater Manchester Police have flown to India to meet Subhash Bidve, the victim's father. He found out about his son's death on Facebook at home in Pune, India, before police in the UK could contact him.

Mr Bidve was studying for a micro-electronics postgraduate qualification at Lancaster University, coming to the UK in September after completing an electronics degree at Pune University.

On Monday night, hundreds of people attended a candlelit memorial service for Mr Bidve at the scene where he was gunned down in Ordsall Lane, while a peace march was held for him in New Delhi, finishing outside the British Embassy.

Far-right author kills two, then self in Florence

An Italian far-right author shot dead two Senegalese vendors and wounded three in Florence on Tuesday before killing himself in a daylight shooting spree that prompted outpourings of grief in the historic city.

Witnesses said they saw the gunman calmly getting out of a car at a street market on Piazza Dalmazia, north of the city centre, and firing off three shots that instantly killed two vendors and seriously wounded a third.

The white assailant, identified by authorities as 50-year-old Gianluca Casseri, then moved on to the San Lorenzo market in the centre -- a popular destination for the thousands of tourists who visit Florence every day -- where he wounded two more vendors. Casseri then turned the gun -- a Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver according to news reports -- on himself after he was surrounded by police.

Around 200 Senegalese marched through the city in an angry protest after the shootings, shouting "Shame!" and "Racists!" Hundreds of immigrants were later seen praying on their knees in tears in front of Florence's famous cathedral.

"The heart of Florence is crying today," Florence Mayor Matteo Renzi said in a Twitter message, declaring the city would hold a day of mourning Wednesday and would pay to repatriate the bodies to Senegal.

"I think the pain for the lives that have been cut short is not only for the Senegalese community but for all the citizens of our city," Renzi said.

International Cooperation and Integration Minister Andrea Riccardi and a Senegalese imam will attend a ceremony at Florence city hall on Wednesday.

"The Senegalese are good people, people who never get into trouble, who work every day," one Senegalese man told news channel SkyTG24. Another man said: "These lads who were killed were only earning money for their wives, their fathers, their children."

Roccangelo Tritto, a spokesman for local Carabinieri police, told AFP that the man wounded at Piazza Dalmazia would live but remain paralysed for life. The other two men were also in a serious condition -- one with a wound to the abdomen and another shot in the chest.

Casseri was the author of fantasy novels including "The Key of Chaos" about a wizard, a mathematician and an alchemist, which enjoyed some popularity. He also wrote an academic paper about Dracula folklore and was the editor of a niche magazine about fantasy and horror fiction and comics.

Casseri lived on his own in the Tuscan countryside near Pistoia. He was also a member of Casa Pound, a right-wing community group that is seen as more intellectual than other far-right organisations.

"He was a bit strange, a bit of a loner but he didn't seem crazy. He was living in his own world," said Fabio Barsanti, a regional coordinator for Casa Pound.

"He didn't seem capable of doing something like this," he said, adding: "We are against any type of violence. We consider the Senegalese humans like us."

Barsanti said Casseri was known locally mostly as a World War I buff.

While Casa Pound distanced itself from Casseri's actions, left-wingers were quick to pin the blame on a climate of racism in the country. Walter Veltroni, a lawmaker from the centre-left Democratic Party, said the shootings were "a terrorist attack by a right-wing extremist."

"What happened in Florence is the product of a climate of intolerance against foreigners that has grown over the years," he said.

Nichi Vendola, leader of the Left, Ecology and Liberty party, condemned what he said was "a racist and fascist Italy that sows hatred."

At the scene of the first shooting in Piazza Dalmazia, eyewitnesses quoted by Italian media said they were in shock and a newspaper seller said the gunman told him: "Get out of the way or I'll bump you off next."

"I heard the shots but I thought they were fireworks. Then I turned around and I saw three men on the ground in a pool of blood," one vendor said.

Another man said: "There are often Senegalese guys here who sell the usual stuff, they don't bother anyone and no one was expecting this."

African vendors can be seen on the streets of Italy's main cities selling sculptures, trinkets and fake designer handbags. They are often selling their wares illegally but are popular with tourists and local residents.

Neo-nazi link to 10 murders in Germany

German investigators say they can confirm evidence to link the murders of 10 people to far-right extremists.

Over the past seven years eight Turks and one Greek, all of them food vendors, have been shot in the face while at work, most on small kebab stalls. The tenth victim was a policewoman shot in 2007.

Last week two men were found dead during the search of a burnt-out house and caravan in the east German town of Zwickau. Two handguns believed to have been used in the murders were discovered. A woman at the scene was arrested. All three are known to have had previous links to far-right groups.

German Justice Minister Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger said: “What has been reported so far is alarming. We now need a comprehensive explanation and what needs to be the focus is whether or not the suspects belong to a right-wing extremist network.”

Some community representatives think the authorities have been slow to make the link to extremists. Ken Kolat, Chairman of the Turkish Community in Germany, said: “There is unfortunately no real discussion right now in Germany about racism or racist terror. This discussion has to start immediately.”

Killers were known to police for links to far-right group and football violence

Two murderers of a vulnerable Lincoln man had links to the far-right English Defence League, according to police.

Daryll Jones, 17, and Mark Jackson, 21, were two of the top targets in Lincolnshire Police's attempts to ban people from the Sincil Bank area on Lincoln City match days. They were identified by football intelligence officers along with ten others in Operation Argyll.

As reported in the Echo, this operation aims to use civil football banning orders to stop people hanging around with suspected troublemakers. But the cases against Jones and Jackson, of Yarborough Road, Lincoln, were put on hold after they were arrested on suspicion of killing football enthusiast Shaun Rossington.

Asperger's sufferer Shaun, 21, of Dunkirk Road, was found to have suffered more than 40 injuries. He was punched, kicked and stamped on during the attack on grassland, off Searby Road, on June 3. Jones and Jackson were found guilty of his murder, along with two others, at Nottingham Crown Court on Friday.

Lincolnshire Police football intelligence officer PC Karl Williams said: "When we initially started Operation Argyll, Jones and Jackson were quite prominent. If they had not been charged with murder, they would have been on the scheme. We started to get information on these two every time Lincoln City had a game and there were some indications they were connected to the English Defence League."

In September 2009, Jones and Jackson were banned from entering Lincoln City's Sincil Bank stadium and Lincoln United's Ashby Avenue. Police issued the warnings after the pair were identified in a group that caused disorder at Ashby Avenue and Lincoln train station on August 22, 2009. Jones pleaded guilty to one public order offence related to these incidents last March.

PC Williams said: "The ultimate aim of the operation is to target those youths not only causing problems at the football, but in the city centre and at night on the estates. It was a case if we are able to ban them from the football, it's taking away the chance of them getting convicted of more serious offences. We were compiling the cases on Jones and Jackson and they were quite strong. They were two of our strongest ones and I have no doubt whatsoever we would have got them banned."

Nicolas Shelbourne, 27, of Laughton Way, Lincoln, and Jordan O'Rouke, 17, were also convicted of Shaun's murder. Jurors found a 17-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, guilty of manslaughter. A 16-year-old boy was cleared of all charges. A 14-year-old girl was found not guilty of murder, but guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Neo-Nazi skinheads jailed in Russia for racist killings

A court in Moscow has sentenced nine members of a neo-Nazi skinhead gang to prison terms of up to 23 years.

The gang members, most in their late teens, were found guilty of a string of brutal and very public murders. The skinheads targeted people of Central Asian origin and posted videos of their attacks on the Internet.

Russia has seen a surge of racially-motivated attacks in recent years. In 2009 alone, neo-Nazis are believed to have killed more than 70 people. The nine neo-Nazis called themselves "The White Wolves". They sought out Central Asian migrants, and attacked them in Moscow's back streets. They clubbed some of their victims to death with wooden planks and killed others by repeatedly stabbing them with knives and screwdrivers.

In one case, a glazier from Kyrgyzstan was stabbed 73 times, as the gang members shouted "Russia for the Russians!" and filmed the murder on their mobile phones. The jury heard the gang was responsible for at least 11 killings, possibly even more.

And so - after five months of deliberations - came the prison terms: Twenty-three years for the gang leader and up to nine years for the others - the maximum prison term allowed in Russia for underage criminals. Human rights activists have welcomed the sentencing. They admit that the police are now cracking down on skinhead gangs. But even so, last year alone, dozens were killed, and hundreds injured simply for not looking Slavic, and for speaking with a foreign accent.

BNP man rapped for 'murder' claim

A British National Party politician has been ordered to apologise in writing to every other council member for accusing ruling Tories of "murdering" a constituent by forcing her to move.

Mark Logan, member for Gooshays ward, was hauled before the council's standards committee for the allegation he made at a Harold Hill Area Committee meeting in October last year. There, he blamed Havering Council for causing the death of 92-year-old Anne O'Kane because of the stress of a council-enforced eviction - her second in four years.

She had to move from her bungalow in Chippenham Gardens - part of a group of homes being demolished to make way for developments under the council's multi-million pound Harold Hill Ambitions project.

The outburst angered people at the meeting, including Deputy Council Leader Cllr Steven Kelly, who was not on the committee but sitting among residents, and committee member Cllr Keith Darvill (Lab, Heaton). They both made official complaints because they thought Cllr Logan had breached council conduct.

Following a lengthy investigation, a standards consideration sub-committee made up of two councillors - Wendy Brice-Thompson (Con, Rom) and Michael Deon-Burton (ILRG, Rain) - and independent chairman Jack Knowles decided in a closed meeting that Cllr Logan had brought the council into disrepute by making his accusation of murder. They also said he showed no respect for the family of the deceased constituent by naming her.

Cllr Logan was told to make a written apology to the relatives of Ms O'Kane and to write to all other councillors for disrespecting the council. Cllr Logan said: "It cost thousands of pounds to carry out this investigation. If they'd asked me to write a letter of apology in the first place I would have done anyway."

He added: "It was their decision (Conservatives) that decided to sell off those bungalows to a private investor. I should have used a different rhetoric, but I'm still convinced it was the actions of the Conservative administration that caused the death of this constituent because if she hadn't been forced to move she may not have had a heart attack and passed away. She'd been really upset she had to move."

Cllr Logan is awaiting a second standards committee hearing, planned for January, in relation to allegations of misconduct surrounding a dispute with Cllr Mark Gadd over where he lives and whether he has a right to stand as a councillor.

Man guilty of stabbing 'veil martyr' to death in court

Russian-German who hated all foreigners jailed for killing muslim woman

It started with a seemingly trivial argument about a swing in a children's playground, but soon spiralled into one of the most shocking racist murders Germany has witnessed since its reunification. Eleven months later, Marwa el-Sherbini, a beautiful and well-educated Egyptian woman expecting her second child, was brutally stabbed to death with a 12-inch knife in front of judges in open court in the east German city of Dresden.

Her husband, tried to protect her and was attacked for his pains. He was left clinging to his 31-year-old Muslim wife in a pool of her blood on the courtroom floor, as their three-year-old son looked on. As he mouthed "She's dying, She's dying", Mrs Sherbini bled to death. Security guards had failed to intervene in time.

The case, which aroused scant interest in Germany at the time, provoked outrage throughout the Muslim world. Mrs Sherbini was dubbed the "veil martyr". Yesterday her killer, a 28-year-old German of Russian extraction, was sentenced to life imprisonment. Alexander Wiens stood motionless in the Dresden court only a few doors away from the courtroom where he carried out the murder. This time security has been exceptionally high, with 200 police officers standing guard.

His face covered with a hood and his eyes hidden behind sunglasses, the defendant was convicted of murder, attempted murder and causing grievous bodily harm. Judges said that, because of the severity of Wiens's crime, he would not be eligible for parole after 15 years. An unemployed member of Russia's German-speaking minority, Wiens is one of thousands of Russian Germans who have moved to Germany since reunification. Many, whose forebears migrated to Russia in the 18th century, have failed to integrate into German society and are treated as outsiders.

Elwy Okaz, Mrs Sherbini's Egyptian husband, who is a geneticist, was in court to hear the verdict, still using crutches as a result of the injuries he sustained. He gave the court a tearful account of how badly their son, now aged four, missed his mother.

The court yesterday accepted the prosecution's argument that Wiens was driven by "an unbridled hatred of foreigners". The presiding judge, Birgit Wiegand, said Wiens, who, listed his activities as "drinking, smoking and gambling", had moved to Germany in 2003. She said he had described life in the country as "multicultural shit" and blamed foreigners for taking away German jobs. "He despised Muslims. In his eyes they were all Islamic fanatics," she said. "He wanted to be a perfect German."

The events that led to the tragic and brutal murder of Mrs Sherbini, a pharmacist who was working at Dresden University, began on a sunny Thursday afternoon in August last year when she strolled into a children's playground. She was wearing jeans, a white blouse and the only indication that she was Muslim was a small headscarf. With her was her son, Mustafa.

The toddler wanted a go on one of the two swings in the playground, but they were both occupied. Wiens sat on one, smoking a cigarette. Mrs Sherbini asked him in German whether he would mind getting off because her son wanted a turn. His immediate response was a torrent of insults. "You are an Islamist and a terrorist who has no business in Germany," he said, adding that she was no better than a "whore" and that her son too would grow up to be a "terrorist".

The mother was shocked and felt horribly insulted. A bystander who had witnessed the incident called the police. Mrs Sherbini was persuaded to file an official complaint against Wiens. Three months later, he was found guilty by a Dresden district court and ordered to pay a €330 (£298) fine.

Wiens refused and wrote a letter to the court which concluded: "I feel humiliated and unfairly treated by the German justice system." He appealed and the case was again referred to Dresden' district court. The following month the fine imposed on him was increased to €780. Wiens again refused to pay and launched another appeal which was heard by the city's regional court on 1 July this year.

Judge Tom Maciejewski, who was in charge of proceedings that day, has been too distraught to work ever since. He choked on his words and had to interrupt his testimony frequently when he was called as a witness at Wiens' subsequent murder trial. On the day of the killing he had assumed the case was regarding a minor offence that could be dealt with in minutes. Security was correspondingly lax.

"I registered the fact that Wiens had a bag on his lap and I heard the zip-fastener being pulled open," he said. "Then I saw him leap up and attack her with his fists. It was like a machine gun. I ran to him and tried to grab him ... and then I saw that he had this knife in his right hand."

The judge ran out of the court and tried to find help. When he walked back in, Mrs Sherbini's husband, who had by then also been knifed, was saying, "She's dying". At that moment an armed security guard ran into the courtroom and, assuming Mrs Sherbini's husband was the attacker, promptly shot him in the leg. By that time Mrs Sherbini was dead.

The shocking courtroom murder was hardly reported in Germany. The case was treated as a domestic argument that had run out of control and as a failure of court security proceedings. In the Muslim world however, it was treated as an example of German Islamophobia and provoked protests in several Arab countries.

Despite complaints that Chancellor Angela Merkel's government had failed adequately to condemn the murder at the time, Egypt's ambassador to Germany, Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, welcomed yesterday's verdict."I think that getting the maximum possible sentence says a lot," he said. "I think it enables the family to feel that justice has been done."

Maria Böhmer, the German government official responsible for immigrant affairs, said the verdict sent a clear signal. "The message is: there is no place for xenophobia in our country," she said.

BNP London assembly member under investigation for YouTube murder allegations

Greater London authority investigates allegation that Richard Barnbrook wrongly claimed that three murders had taken place in his borough

Richard Barnbrook, the BNP's only member in the London assembly, is under investigation by the Greater London authority after he was accused of wrongly alleging that three murders had taken place in his borough.

Barnbrook, GLA member for Barking and Dagenham, claimed in September that a girl was killed within the borough three weeks before. He also claimed that within the same timeframe, two other people were murdered in knife attacks.

He made the claims while accusing Boris Johnson, the London mayor, and councils of failing to do enough to tackle knife crime in the capital.

Barnbrook made the allegations on a YouTube video, posted on his website as part of an attack on local authorities' action against knife crime

The GLA's standards subcommittee decided last month to refer the allegation to the monitoring officer for further investigation after viewing the broadcast. Under section five of the code, London assembly members are warned they must not conduct themselves in a manner which could reasonably be regarded as bringing their office or authority into disrepute.

Barnbrook, also a member of the 11-strong BNP group at Barking and Dagenham council, could be suspended by the GLA for up to six months if the complaint is upheld against him, or face tougher sanctions at the hands of the adjudication panel for England.

Valerie Rush, executive member of Barking and Dagenham with responsibility for safer neighbourhoods and policing, lodged the complaint against Barnbrook with the standards committees of both her own council and the GLA for allegedly bringing his position as an assembly member into "disrepute" and seeking to "damage the reputation of the GLA and its elected members as well as Barking & Dagenham council".

Rush alleged in her complaint that Barnbrook's claim over the murder of a young girl was "an absolute lie".

"He also goes on to claim a further two murders in the borough in the last two weeks, which is also a lie," she added.

Boris Johnson, the London mayor, is a member of the standards committee which will be responsible for deciding Barnbrook's fate if the allegations against the BNP are proven.

Though GLA sanctions are limited up to six months' suspension, the committee has the option from next month to refer the matter directly to an independent judicial tribunal, the adjudication panel for England, which could lead to tougher sanctions up to and including being disbarred for five years.

Barnbrook was discussing knife crime fatalities and the failure of both Johnson and local authorities to "do more" to tackle the scourge of knife crime, when he said: "This year alone, up until now there has been 27 murders of youths between 13 and 17 by knife crimes with several thousand more being attacked by knives," said Barnbrook.

"In Barking and Dagenham alone three weeks ago there was a murder of a young girl, we don't know who's done it; her girlfriend was attacked inside an educational institute. Again two weeks ago there was another attack by knives on the streets of Barking and Dagenham and two people were murdered."

Barnbrook told guardian.co.uk he had been advised by the GLA not to comment while the investigation was still under way. But blogger Adam Bienkov, who first broke the story, said Barnbrook had told him that his dyslexia may have led him to have "muddled" his account.

"He also said that one of the three murders he had referred to in the video, had actually taken place 'just over the river' from Barking and Dagenham."

Barking and Dagenham police were unavailable for comment.

Murder accusation shocks meeting

Accusations of murder slung at Havering Council by a BNP councillor caused outrage at a Harold Hill Area Committee meeting. Committee member Cllr Mark Logan (BNP, Gooshays) shocked both fellow councillors and attending residents when he blamed the Conservative administration for the death of an elderly constituent.

Cllr Logan said: "I do not mince my words. A week ago they found her dead; I accuse the administration of murdering one of my constituents."

In the shocking outburst Cllr Logan claimed the stress of a council-enforced eviction - her second in four years - caused 92-year-old Anne O'Kane to die.

According to Cllr Logan, Ms O'Kane was "crying and begging" not to be moved from her Chippenham Gardens bungalow - part of a group of homes being demolished for future development in the council's multi-million pound Harold Hill Ambitions Project.

The council argued the bungalows were not fit for habitation, but Cllr Logan deemed them "structurally sound" and slammed the Ambitions project as a cynical means of "wheeling and dealing in public goods".

During the minute-long tirade, Cllr Logan eyeballed the council's deputy leader, Steven Kelly, who is not on the committee but was sitting among residents.

Cllr Logan said: "Four years ago the council told her to vacate her house. She thought she would see the rest of her days out in this bungalow, but on the fifth [of September] she was told to vacate again by the council. You went to take this bungalow off this lady."

He added: "I think it's disgusting. I have no faith in you."

Cllr Kelly remained tightlipped, but Cllr Keith Darvill (Lab, Heaton) said: "I object to the language Cllr Logan has used. It is disgraceful. To accuse anyone of murder is a very serious offence."

Cllr Darvill has pledged to make a formal complaint to the standards committee believing Cllr Logan to have breached the councillors' code of conduct.

FBI foil neo-Nazi plot to assassinate Barack Obama and kill another 101 black Americans

A plot to kill Barack Obama and 101 other black Americans was foiled yesterday.

Federal agents said two neo-Nazis were being held over a plan to rob a gun store and target a predominantly black high school in Tennessee.

The pair intended to shoot 88 African-Americans and decapitate another 14, said Jim Cavanaugh, of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The numbers 88 and 14 are symbolic in the white supremacist community.

Obama was their final target, Cavanaugh added. 'They said that would be their last, final act - that they would attempt to kill Senator Obama.

'They didn't believe they would be able to do it, but that they would get killed trying.'

The planned bloodbath was unveiled in court records unsealed last night.

Daniel Cowart, 20, of Bells, Tennessee, and Paul Schlesselman 18, of West Helena, Arkansas, have been charged with possessing an unregistered firearm, conspiring to steal firearms and threatening a candidate for president.

More charges are possible, Mr Cavanaugh added.

Agents said the skinheads did not identify the school by name. Officers seized a rifle, a sawn- off shotgun and three pistols from the pair who, officials said, were preparing to steal more firearms.

Anti-racism campaigners said the number 88 is used by white supremacists as an abbreviation for Heil Hitler as H is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

The figure 14 represents a slogan consisting of that many words, coined by American white supremacist leader David Lane, who is serving a 190-year jail sentence.

The plot was similar to one uncovered during the Democratic party convention in Denver last month. Then, three white supremacists were arrested after being found with a sniper rifle and being high on drugs.

Later FBI agents and the Secret Service decided not to charge them after coming to the conclusion they did not pose a real threat.

The latest plot came to light with just a week to go in the race to be the next President of the United States.

Senator Obama fiercely criticised Republican candidate John McCain in a 'closing argument' as little more than a clone of George Bush. Both candidates were in Ohio, seen as a crucial state in the election next Tuesday.

Senator McCain was repeating his charge that Mr Obama was a tax-and-spend liberal.

But having said over the weekend that he and President Bush, as fellow Republicans, share some economic philosophies, Mr McCain was accused of doing a U-turn yesterday.

'We (Obama and McCain) both disagree with President Bush on economic policies. My approach is to get spending under control,' Mr McCain said.

He added that the difference was that: 'He (Obama) thinks taxes have been too low and I think that spending has been too high.'

Mr Obama said: 'After 21 months and three debates, Senator McCain still has not been able to tell the American people a single major thing he'd do differently from George Bush when it comes to the economy.'

He claimed that 'the biggest gamble we can take is embracing the same old Bush-McCain policies that have failed us for the last eight years'.

Death to George Bush! Death to Tony Blair! The paradox of Andrew Gatward: (fake?) convert to Islam yet a racist obsessed with Muslims

Andrew Gatward is a racist obsessed with Muslims. His personal blog and other internet postings almost exclusively rant against Muslims and Islam. Yet, we can reveal that in early to mid 2006 Andrew Gatward purported to be a convert to Islam and devout Muslim on an Islamic website, IslamiCity.com! Registered as ‘jajabinks101’ and signing off his posts as ‘Andy’, Andrew Gatward gave the appearance of an enthusiastic convert to Islam. Not only that but he claims that as a Muslim he is more than prepared to fight and kill Americans, and calls for George Bush and Tony Blair to be murdered.

But, we wonder whether Andrew Gatward faked being a convert to Islam or subsequently left Islam and ceased to be Muslim. It is clear from our research that both prior to and after 2006 Andrew Gatward posts numerous racist anti-Muslim postings on the internet.

Posting as UKpatriot on another Muslim website, islamicawakening.com, Andrew Gatward abuses Muslim users on the same thread with the following comments:

“This is our country ... Why dont you just leave OUR country and practice what you believe in freely elsewhere? ... The UK is waking up to this silent muslim invasion and I promise while im alive i would fight to the death ... Openly posting as Andrew Gatward, he then issues the following warning to British Muslims in the guestbook of another website:

It is in the following post on Islamicity.com that BNP organiser Andrew Gatward calls for George Bush and Tony Blair to be killed:

On the same thread, Andrew Gatward then abuses another poster whom he accuses of being a current or former US army soldier.

Interestingly, a year ago, three months after he joined the BNP, Andrew Gatward wrote an article, US and British invasion and oppression, for the Iraqi Arab news agency, Al-Rafdean. Writing on the Iraq war, Andrew Gatward states: “I pray to Allah, that he grants an end to this hate and killing”. We wonder if Andrew Gatward is still pretending to be a Muslim or simply changes tack to suit his perceived audience.

How does Andrew Gatward view himself?

Andrew Gatward describes himself on his main blog, ukpatriot-keepbritainbritish, in the following somewhat gentrified terms:

Andrew Gatward’s ideal description of himself certainly does not tally with his actual behaviour as demonstrated by his various emails and internet postings. Contrary to his assertions about himself, Andrew Gatward is clearly impolite, racist, disrespectful about the politics and religions of other people as well as disrespectful to British law. Combined with a fascination for nazi memorabilia and bayonets and a possible fake conversion to Islam whilst abusing Muslims through his racist postings, Andrew Gatward is indeed a strange character.

Andrew Gatward’s campaign of threats, harassment and abuse against John Taylor

For the past 24 years, John Taylor has served his local community as the Labour councillor for the Dukinfield ward in Tameside, Greater Manchester. Yet, his area has been repeatedly targeted by the BNP. Due to his electoral successful, John Taylor has been subjected to a consistent and targeted campaign of harassment by the BNP. The intensity of this harassment has been such that the local courts granted John Taylor a legal injunction against failed BNP candidate Roy West who stood against John Taylor.

Recently, Andrew Gatward has taken a leading role in co-ordinating the BNP’s campaign of harassment against John Taylor. Within a space of four days, from the 1st July to 5th July 2008, Andrew Gatward bombarded John Taylor with at least twenty emails. Andrew Gatward is a pure political opportunist. Andrew Gatward was quoted as saying: “The party hopes that this unpleasant episode will soon be at an end and activists can concentrate on the real business of saving Britain”. For this act of political treachery, Andrew Gatward has been dubbed ‘Gatward the Turncoat’ by his rival BNP activists.

According to our source, Andrew Gatward was talked back into joining the Griffinite faction of the BNP by the BNP’s intelligence officer, Arthur Kemp (a former intelligence officer for the old racist South African regime). However, it was this act of betrayal towards his former rebel colleagues that led to Andrew Gatward falling out with millionaire BNP businessman Roger Robertson, one of the main financial backers of the Sadie Graham faction. From mid-2007 Roger Robertson was bankrolling a BNP scheme whereby Andrew Gatward was to start a BNP organic farm. The comments by Andrew Gatward’s former BNP colleagues don’t exactly read like a glowing endorsement.

Did Andrew Gatward lie about his BNP membership?

Our sources tell us that Andrew Gatward joined the BNP in March 2007. Yet, in a March 2007 posting on The Times website, Andrew Gatward claimed not to be a BNP member:

Split personality? Is it ‘Andrew Gatward, BNP organiser for West Lindsey’ or ‘Tony, BNP organiser for Boston Holbeach and Spalding’? Or, are they the same person?

Another source of ours claims that Andrew Gatward may also be moonlighting as ‘Tony’, the BNP’s organiser for Boston Holbeach and Spalding (also in Lincolnshire) and operator of the racist pro-BNP blog, The Lincolnshire Patriot. Our source points to four circumstantial factors that leads our source to believe that ‘Tony’ may also be Andrew Gatward. Firstly, the highly idiosyncratic writing style and grammar employed by Andrew Gatward on his main blog, ukpatriot-keepbritainbritish (as well as in his other numerous internet postings) is virtually identical to the writing style and grammar used by ‘Tony’ of The Lincolnshire Patriot blog. This is demonstrated in the blockquote below which compares the ‘Profile’ segment on Andrew Gatward’s ukpatriot-keepbritainbritish blog with the ‘Welcome’ segment on Tony’s The Lincolnshire Patriot blog. What the reader will clearly see from the blockquote, apart from the very similar writing styles and childishly over the top bombastic rhetoric, is that in any sentence that both Andrew Gatward and ‘Tony’ begin with the capital letter ‘I’ any subsequent use of the letter ‘i’ is in lower casing or if a sentence is not begun with ‘I’, if that sentence later then uses the letter ‘i’, again ‘i’ is used in lower case:

Secondly, Tony is short for Anthony and Andrew Gatward’s original birth name is ‘Anthony Cooper’ (Andrew Gatward was adopted at birth).Thirdly, both the ukpatriot-keepbritainbritish blog and The Lincolnshire Patriot blog are singularly obsessed with racist rantings against Muslims (an indirect reference to Asians), Andrew Gatward’s favourite hobby horse (see above). Fourthly, both blogs make repetitive use of the same shared phrases such as ‘Great Britain’ and ‘Islamification’, key Andrew Gatward signature traits and many postings on both blogs are partially written in capital letters.

Our source may be right. But, we would also like to hear from any informed readers who may be able to confirm this.

Conclusion

Clearly Andrew Gatward is a potentially dangerous person. He has unequivocally stated in his emails that he is prepared to commit violence against John Taylor, a grandfather of two. Further, let’s not forget his open admission that he’s prepared to fight Americans and raises the prospect of violence against non-Whites and Muslims in Britain. From our understanding, John Taylor has discussed the Redwatch death threat and Andrew Gatward’s abusive emails with the police. Let’s hope that arrests soon follow. The lessons of World War 2 and the Spanish Civil War serve as bitter reminders as to why we should not forget the reality of the BNP as fascists and racists intent on achieving their goals by any means necessary. ¡No Pasarán!

Far-right website offers bounty of £1000 for 'very severe beating'

Pete Barker, the administrator of the North West Nationalist blog, noted for its occasionally interesting rants against the BNP's Nick Griffin, seems to have tipped over into both lunacy and illegality by offering a £1000 bounty to anyone who will give a 'savage beating' to one Calvin Robert Johnson, who Barker believes is responsible for the death of his brother Chris, a National Front local election candidate and national steward before joining the Army.

Whichever way you read it, the story of Chris Barker's death is a tragedy. A former soldier suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, he succumbed to heroin and other drugs and eventually died in June 2001 after what an inquest described as a 'drugs and booze binge' at his then partner's home. Barker's arms were covered with up to ten injection marks and traces of heroin and cocaine were found in his body.

There are a number of peculiarities about the story, one being that Barker allegedly kept £10,000 in cash at his home, this sum having been saved from his occasional work as a cabinet maker. True or not, after his death his credit card showed a debt of £4000 and there was no cash found. In addition to this, Pete Barker claims that his brother had given up hard drugs twelve years before his death.

The case is both convoluted and disturbing, and while we can be sympathetic to Pete Barker's continued campaign to seek what he perceives as justice for his brother's death, which he regards as murder (more details here and here) our sympathy rapidly evaporates when we encounter Barker's appalling racism. Johnson, who Barker accuses of his brother's murder, is 6'4", black and Rastafarian, and is the half-brother of the dead man's partner, Melonie Ellis. Barker variously describes Johnson as looking like a gorilla, 'a nigger' and 'a savage negro beast'.

His racism is not aimed at Johnson alone. Referring to the Johnson family, he states 'There is no resident father...as is typical with negro families'. Barker has also approached organisations connected to the armed forces for support but has claimed that '...because Chris was murdered by blacks, the main official [in one of the organisations he approached] who has black grandchildren, did not want to know.'

This is not the first time he has offered a bounty in exchange for violence. Back at the end of June, Barker wrote:

'The family have a £10,000 reward for info on the negro scumbags leading to an arrest.But being as the Police in Sheffield are not worthy of the name, the family will pay to have 'street justice' donated to Johnson and Ellis. Please contact this site...'

Back in May of this year, Barker printed a picture of Melonie Ellis along with her full address and date of birth and with the headline 'Wanted for murder', with the claim that she and her half-brother '...and other blacks were also involved in the murder of the manager of the Niche nightclub in Sheffield around 1999'.

Obviously Barker has an understandable obsession about his brother's death and he's made it clear that he believes the instigators to be Johnson and Ellis but the way to justice is not via publicly announcing a contract on Johnson or anyone else, nor is justice to be achieved by launching racist attacks on those he considers responsible for the alleged crime.
