Protest forces village to pull plug on BNP

Oh dear. Another venue bites the dust.
A visit by British National Party leader Nick Griffin to a village hall has been cancelled at short notice after pressure was put on the venue's booking secretary by anti-BNP campaigners.

Mr Griffin, whose party has been accused of racism because of its right-wing immigration policies, was due to address a black tie fundraising event at Broadclyst's Victory Hall this evening. But the group Hope not Hate, which campaigns against the BNP, used its website to publish the home telephone number of Roy Elkins, the hall's chairman and booking secretary, and urged people to contact him. It also sent out a number of emails containing the information.

Yesterday the BNP confirmed that its booking had been cancelled. Despite the setback, the party said it had found an alternative venue for the Battle of Britain-themed night, which is part of a national tour which organisers hope will enable them to raise £500,000 to allow the BNP to field candidates for every seat in June's European elections.

BNP spokesman Simon Danby said a campaign of intimidation and harassment had followed the party's roadshow around the country. "It is common practice for these groups to target village hall committee members," he said. "Some have had threats to their property and their homes. We are a legitimate political party and it is disgraceful that these people, many of whom have nothing to do with the BNP, have been targeted. It's very sinister."

He said he still expected between 100 and 200 BNP supporters from around Devon and Cornwall to attend the event, which would be held at a location due to be announced later today.

Gerry Gable, of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight and the Hope not Hate website, defended his actions in publishing Mr Elkin's telephone number.

"This is a tactic we have used around the country and it is proving effective," he said. "We always ask people to be polite to the person who answers the telephone when they make their point. We are perfectly within our rights to be doing this. With the BNP it's not just a few rotten apples, it's the whole barrel that's rotten."

The BNP outraged Broadclyst villagers last year when it held a public meeting in the Victory Hall.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Broadclyst and Whimple Derek Button said he was glad the village would not be hosting the party once again.

"Some people might say that we're a village hall committee and we're obliged to let the village hall without let or hindrance to anyone who applies," he said. "I might have been tempted to tell the BNP the hall was booked up for the next 49 years."

He said he was sorry Mr Elkins had been involved in the matter without his consent.

"Roy is a man who has given much of his life to the service of Broadclyst and it's a great shame that he's been dragged into this," he added.

Mr Elkins, of Beech Close, Broadclyst, chose not to comment.

Simon Danby? Who he?

I thought it would annoy Darby so I left it in. :-)

The publication of the phone number was illegal, and is currently being looked into. Again, the left has shown it's contempt for democracy by using threats and intimidation to get it's way when force of argument fails.

Bloody hypocrites.

So is anyone able to monitor the BNP chatter later today to find out where the new venue will be?

This just shows that activism works, even if only via a phone line and/or the internet. Lets keep these racist bastards on the run.

Lordy, do I hear the threat of Lee 'Bonkers' Barnes in the offing? Excuse me while I go and quake in my boots.

Roy Elkins is, according to the article, the hall's chairman and booking secretary. That means his phone number is already in the public domain. He has also already allowed at least one BNP meeting there and the youth group was run by a BNP member - Mr Elkins is far from being an innocent bystander.

>The publication of the phone number was illegal

If you google the phone number 01392 461528 it returns 18 results surely its not illegal to publish a number that is already in the public domain

Oh dear have I just broken the law again? that will be 19 results on google now

Salford, Pendlebury result from last night

Labour 38.2% up 1.3%
Conservative 31.6% up 0.4%
BNP 13.5% up 0.2%
Lib Dem 13.3% down 0.9%
Independent 1.8% down 2.6%
Green 1.6%

Shame about the Greens but just a .2% increase in the BNP vote is astonishing given the state of the recession/Labour/bankers/unemployment and so on. They aren't exactly grabbing the voters wholesale are they?

Where' s Iliacus? We need a good byelection sarastic article.

Was that number 01392 461528?

Just checking....

"Gerry Gable, of anti-fascist magazine Searchlight and the Hope not Hate website, defended his actions in publishing Mr Elkin's telephone number."

There's nothing to defend. It's a good way to disrupt the activities of the BNP and is therefore right and proper.

Contempt for democracy my arse! This from a party which would remove the right of citizenship from millions our fellow human beings. And this muppet calls you hypocrites?

People like Mr. Elkins should not be allowed to provide meeting space to the fascist BNP and anti-racists were right to do whatever was necessary to correct his attitude.

Well done HNH!

Well done all! :)

Let me just qualify my remarks.....
The publication of Mr Elkins phone number for the sole purpose of threatening and intimidating him into cancelling the BNP booking is illegal.

If, for example a pub or hall owner cancelled a scheduled UAF meeting because of threats as a result of a published phone number you lot would be screaming blue murder - demanding police action etc.

Again, the contempt for democracy is staggering, as is your interpretation of BNP citizenship policy. "Remove the right", my arse!

Exeter BNP WILL be meeting in Devon this weekend!

True. Where is he? Has he stopped contributing? (or she, of course)

Anti- fascist, yeah of course you are, using violence against people who disagree with your political views that's an act of fascism isn't it. Try defending yourself from that one.Oh you can't so you just won't post it, you nasty piece of fascist shit.

"The publication of Mr Elkins phone number for the sole purpose of threatening and intimidating him into cancelling the BNP booking is illegal."

You've been listening to that idiot non-solicitor of yours too much. People were asked to remain polite when they called, and do. If the number had been posted with the deliberate intention of threatening and/or intimidating, that would be illegal. This clearly wasn't the case.

"If, for example a pub or hall owner cancelled a scheduled UAF meeting because of threats as a result of a published phone number you lot would be screaming blue murder - demanding police action etc."

I seem to remember a few bomb threats were made to stop the Leon Greenman meeting going ahead a few years ago at Lancaster Town Hall. It still went ahead though. And didn't you say you'd received a series of threatening phone calls a while back Ketlan? You're still here though. These BNP bods just don't have the courage of their convictions - though they do have plenty of convictions.

The new venue is in Axminster, more details to follow...

It must be such a dreadful fag lugging all that "Battle for Britain" promotional material for our brave Polish pilots from one venue to another.
What a shame. Still, never mind, eh.

"Bill said"........

"Fuck off".

What an ignorant arse. Typical leftie - has no rational argument and resorts to bad language.

Mr Elkins (who has nothing to do with the BNP) WAS threatened so it now a police matter. This advice comes not from LB but from a circuit (Crown Court) judge.

Not if I have anything to do with it you won't.

They really must be committed - or I mean should be committed..... to a home for the bewildered.

And we all know how the BNP is SO packed with judges willing to offer advice at the drop of a wig. Idiot.

That Pendlebury result was interesting. As someone of Stormshite pointed out

"That 2008 vote was 13.3%, the third best of the six Salford wards contested by the BNP.

In 2007 the party polled 13.6% here, again the third best BNP ward in Salford that year."

So the BNP is DOWN from 2007 and only very slightly up on 2008. Not good at all given the political climate at the mo.

Alright, then east Devon. You reds are really argumentative aren't you?

Off topic, but I notice that Nick Griffin is personally appealing for donations to the "Liverpool Truth Truck restoration fund" to repair damage caused to Peter Tierney's Land Rover in Wigan, when Liverpool BNP thugs tried to intimidate anti-fascists and came off second best.

Didn't Tierney have insurance? It's a criminal offence to drive without insurance.

Aw, he looks so sad in that picture, bless his greasy little nazi bastard head.

Axminster on Saturday

Don't worry folks I'm still here - just a bit busy.

Will be writing again soon - looking forward to the Accounts, which will - of course - be declared on time !!

(rolls around the floor laughing ....)

On topic - how can a Village Hall's bookings secretary's telephone number be a secret? How do they arrange bookings down there in Devon? By carrier pigeon?

"Didn't Tierney have insurance? It's a criminal offence to drive without insurance."

The compulsary insurance element is that of "Third Party" to cover the liability for damage done to others by the tortous acts of the person in control of the vehicle and trailer.

I doubt if any insurance company would knowingly cover any vehicle or trailer being used in this fashion. The words "Non Disclosure" come to mind and if Lee Barnes does not understand this could I suggest he consults any competant solicitor.

Is that Axminster or Exminster? Axminster seems a little 'far flung' - but perhaps we'll beat them back over the Dorset border yet! Spotters report no meeting occurring in Exeter or M5 corridor tonight. Not sure yet on Axminster though, a bit of a drive for anyone coming from Cornwall, South Devon or North Devon!

Let's put an end to this crap about contempt for democracy for once and for all, shall we?

BNP = threat to democracy.

Potential BNP members made to understand that joining the fascists = loss of job, friends, etc = less BNP members.

Actual BNP members losing jobs and income = less money for BNP = less BNP activity = less BNP members = threat to democracy reduced.

I was a fascist once and I lost my job due to the actions of local anti-fascists. I was pretty pissed off at the time but realise now that they did me, and more importantly everyone else around me, a big big favour.

The moral of the story is this - don't set out your stall as an enemy of our multi-ethnic democracy yet expect everybody else to play by the Queensbury Rules when dealing with you.

If you are a fascist and you are in the business of spreading racist poison, at least have the balls to accept what's coming to you when normal, decent people decide they are not going to take your shit.
