BNP leader Nick Griffin has said he is going to stand in the Westminster constituency of Barking, east London, in the next general election
In June, the party won its first two seats in the European Parliament. Mr Griffin was elected for the North West region while Andrew Brons picked up another BNP seat in Yorkshire and Humber, where it won 10% of the vote.
Margaret Hodge, Labour MP for Barking, said she was "more than ready to expose and expel the BNP from the borough". She told the BBC she was ready to face a challenge in her constituency from the BNP leader.
"I always knew I would have a BNP candidate and it has turned out to be him," she said.
Mr Griffin said the BNP was not racist, but won votes because it "spoke openly about the problem of immigration". Mr Griffin said the BNP would concentrate more money and manpower on the Barking constituency than the party had targeted on any other election campaign. He said he believed the campaign would have repercussions throughout Essex.
Mr Griffin told a news conference: "It's all phoney with the other parties. Sometimes we can be a little blunt, a little politically incorrect, but we're always honest and people know that now."
He said the country faced a second economic crisis because the money pumped into the economy had not gone to generate solid jobs, and that in the face of the ensuing crisis the BNP stood poised to "sweep aside" Labour in a number of seats.
"The chickens are going to come home to roost in a monstrous way very soon," he said.
Mr Griffin was elected to the European Parliament in June even though the BNP polled fewer votes in the north-west England region than it had in 2004 - the slump in Labour support meant its share of the vote increased. It meant that although the BNP came fifth in the popular vote for the area, it won a seat through the system of proportional representation used in the European elections.

Can you be an MEP and an MP at the same time?
Hasn't he got enough to do being an MEP? If not, why does he employ all those people?
It's very odd, one minute Barnbrook is whingeing because Griffin pushed him out of the Barking seat and he then paid for a billboard poster, much to Griffin's annoyance, now the idiot is smiling and shaking hands with him.
Yet in his latest begging letter a few days ago Griffin announced that he was going to stand in Thurrock, "where the split vote between the old parties means we could win a Parliamentary seat with just 27% of the vote"?
What has happened to Dickie lol?
I would also like to know if god forbid the idiot gets elected can he be both and MEP and MP (leader) at teh same time?
I heard somewhere if your an MP the seat normally goes to the next person on the list as there are no -by elections for Euro seats.
If I recall a Labour MEP died half term last time and was replaced by the next person on their list.
If Griffo the ego gets elected he will prob give the seat to teh BNP number two in the North West which would be Martin boring Wighfield of whatever his name is lol.
The fat bastards just making sure he piles up the cash before the BNP collapses from internal wrangling over allowing non-whites in.
"We're always honest"
Must be a different N Griffin speaking.
re Kev Scott -
My understanding is that No, you can't be an MP and an MEP at the same time.
Who was no.2 on the BNP List in the NW ?
Dicky Bumbrook's just a spineless racist arsehole who will stick his tongue up Cyclops's smelly arse just to remain part of the gang.
Talk about weasels.
Yes, it is possible to be an MP and MEP - Ian Paisley was both.
Griffin has given Barnbrook a lot of soft soap about the seat being winnable with the raised profile and standing aside for the greater good of the party etc. Barnbrook has had no choice but to accept it - for now - but his ever so precious ego is hurting.
He may have to have a good stiff drink to get over it. Well, I heard him say "a good stiff...", then he moved out of earshot.
Yes you can. Paisley was for years.
I blame BBC Question Time for all the free advertising the Nazi scum are getting.
we beez media darlings n sheeit now.
My understanding is that the rules have changed since Paisley was an MP and MEP at the same time.
Won't make any difference anyway, since Griffin ain't going to win!
Where oh where will Bumcrook end up next?
A cinema usher! -says one
A toilet attendant! -says another
"There are no jobs available at the moment for an obnoxious, arrogant boring twat"!-shouted the rest
Yes, I can picture it now, Griffin in parliament, shaking, looking nervous and not quite working out whats going on all around him.
Jeering at everyone with an awkward and uneasy voice whilst getting struck down by the speaker-then coming out of the place, blubbering, telling the media how the House Of Commons were a lynch-mob, lol
It's a pity he's up against Hodge cos I'd like to see her out on her ear. However, in the interests of keeping that fat one-eyed wanker away from even more cash, I might actually vote for her next time round.
Does this mean that Barnbrook will stand for Dagenham instead? Or some other place he has virtually no link to? Or has he been thrown out of the contast completely?
Why are people asking if Griffin can be both MP and MEP? Do they think he'll get in? If elected he wouldn't be allowed to be both. There was a rule change this year. But it won't happen even though the words Barking and Griffin somehow go together.
It gives us lots of time to make sure he has no chance at all of getting that seat, he would have been better keeping it a secret till the last miniute :-), now everyone knows we must work together to put fringe groups indipendants etc in to sink Gri££in, it also gives us 5 months to plan our legal attack,
Gwen....
Margaret Hodge, Labour MP for Barking, said she was "more than ready to expose and expel the BNP from the borough".
What, like she did before? She won't stand a chance.
Won't make any difference anyway, since Griffin ain't going to win!
I'm glad you are so confident, becaue i'm not. He has been hit with everything and people are still saying they are going to vote for them. After there constitution is changed then what?

Have you not seen him interviewed on Sky and the rest? Sorry to be so negative.
I am concerned by the comments left at the bottom of Vice Cable's column today in the Sunday Mail. Just look at the green arrows.

Griffin's recent comment about London, these words should be used against this bastard in the run up to the General Election in Barking?
"That audience was taken from a city that is no longer British ... That was not my country any more. Why not come down and do it in Thurrock, do it in Stoke, do it in Burnley?
"Do it somewhere where there are still significant numbers of English and British people [living], and they haven't been ethnically cleansed from their own country."
He added: "There is not much support for me there [in London], because the place is dominated by ethnic minorities. There is an ethnic minority that supports me: the English. But there's not many of them left."
Griffin also slagged off London and said it was finished in the October BNP begging letter. All this must be used against as ammunition against this outsider.

Have you seen The Times report on his standing? The comments at the bottom are disturbing.
"now the idiot is smiling and shaking hands with him."
It looked like a forced smile to me. The sort of smile you'd expect from someone who has a gun pointed at their head.
"Have you not seen him interviewed on Sky and the rest?"
I haven't to be honest, why does he act confident & cocky like he was before question time? if so the sky interviewer isn't grilling him enough, which wouldn't really suprise me
Well Griffin seems to be changing his choice going into Barking, but there is a danger there not for him, but, for the sitting MP.
Hodge is not popular, have a look back on the voting since she became MP and see how her votes have dropped.
Also with the boundary changes coming in 2010 she is getting 3 wards which are almost totally BNP.
It is going to be a big fight, but, the question must be asked who has the bigger resources.

Hodge's tactic for defeating the BNP will be to agree with everything they say!
It looks like Barnbrook has settled for Council leader (if they win) instead of Bailey (who's standing in Dagenham). They are certainly going for it. It will be a Battle Royale as tulip suggests.
Shame though I thought they had lost the plot and would fade away in May. Gri££in's involvement changes everything. PS. Don't think the outer-boroughs regard themselves as part of 'london' and Gilligan in the Telegraph is wrong, Cruddas is a switched on MP whilst Hodge is a disaster and an easy target.
If Anon @5.06 is correct in saying Bailey is going for Dagenham that is good news for Jon Cruddas.
Its very easy to push little Bobs button and get him to loose his temper and on occasion near to violence.
Jon on the other hand is very much a community MP and well liked and respected by his voters, which alas is far more than can be said for M Hodge.
It would have been a struggle to get Hodge elected in Barking without Griffin standing, that is how unpopular she is, and its not Labour that is unpopular its her.
That is where the problems are going to come.

Hi my names Cathy Duffer councillor for Charnwood, I'm also standing in the next GE and will win too like our Nick. You know hes so grate and sexy...
Nick Griffin has a large ego and is not a nationalist I can see Barnbrook pulling away from helping him.
Griffos carbon emmissions are certainly going up with all this travelling. He'll be collecting plenty of frequent liar points then.
I'm very disappointed that Mr Barnbrook is not the candidate.
I was particularly impressed by one of his slogans on the billboard: "Standing up for the Elderly".
It is very reassuring to know that good manners have not completely disappeared.
