Residents complain over BNP rally

A British National Party open air festival being held in Derbyshire has attracted noise complaints before it has even officially started

The Red, White and Blue weekend had faced objections from people in Denby but councillors gave it the go-ahead. But residents living nearby said they were kept awake on Thursday night by karaoke as people arrived.

BNP councillor Alan Warner, who also owns the festival site, said people should not be worried about trouble. He said the event, which officially opens on Friday and runs until Sunday, was for families. About 2,000 people are expected to attend.

John Lumsden, who lives close by, said he expected the next three days to be worse than Thursday night.

"You can't sleep. I had my neighbours come round at about midnight wondering what they could do, should they phone the police, the council. We are going to have to suffer noise, lots and lots of damage to fences because they are going to be going through them - the site is not suitable for this event."

Mr Warner said: "It doesn't matter what sort of a festival you had they (residents) would complain. "

He said those concerned were the type of people who did not want "to see anyone else enjoying themselves".
