Irving’s presence would have cast a shadow over the launch of the city’s year as the European capital of culture.
The hotel’s guest services manager told Searchlight that he knew nothing about David Irving but became concerned when we mentioned Irving’s attempt to speak at the Oxford Union. Uncertain whether he could cancel the meeting because the organisers had paid for the room in advance, he said he would discuss the matter with the police.
But after the hotel was contacted on Friday 11 January by Alec McFadden, President of Merseyside TUC, the meeting was quickly cancelled.
Soon afterwards Irving’s website announced that the meeting had been cancelled “on police advice” and promised that “a full refund will be made”. The audience would not have got much for their money as no refreshments had been booked. Irving thanked “Bob J and his friends who had organised”.
In fact the room had been booked by Michael Sheil, who stood as a British National Party local election candidate in Liverpool in 2003 – so much for Irving’s constant denials that he has any contact with the BNP.

Good. The Holocaust denying piece of shit isn't welcome in Liverpool.
Why does he deny it, or do you just say he does?
What is there to deny or is it just a numbers argument?
Maybe the man is simply mad, how do we find out?
How many of you actually know what he thinks because I don't?
It's good to know that wherever he goes, David Irving is not welcome.
I still haven't found out if it was David Irving who was invited to my school back in around 1988/89 to give a 'history' lecture on world war II. It does look like him. I remember the teachers talking about how they hadn't expected him to start talking about numbers of people who were murdered, they were a bit shocked.
Wander if Nick Griffin or Mark Collett had been planning to attend, or were they too busy shitting themselves???
Apparently Nick Griffin doesn't think David Irving's holocaust denial goes far enough.
Something we should not forget about Griffin - he is a holocaust denier too.
I dunno. Ages ago, a few million people we never met got murdered, butchered, tortured, displaced, humiliated, starved, battered, degraded, lynched, stabbed, raped, gassed, shot, etc, etc.
And yet, we still do not allow a privileged preacher who is unqualified to comment, to besmirch their very memory?
I really do hope his supporters are complaining that Iriving was denied his right to freedom of speech tonight.
That very hope alone gives me joy beyond all belief.

Oh NGs coin. Glad we resolved that one !
Griffin asked me if I wanted to carry on I said no. I wanted to focus on the Black Country as Organiser and wasn't interested in being part of the membership dept. The BC team gained three councillors in 2006.
I worked for expenses, stamps, petrol and so on as a volunteer for a few hours a week - doing the cards and databasing. This is how you get thanked. It took two years for Griffin to pay up as well despite him getting £90,000 a year from his Trafalgar Club ! I seemed to remember "Doc Madness" remember him, was owed thousands by Griffin and in the end sold the party camcorder to recoup some of what was owed.
I heard from some lads in the East of England that Chris Green had cottoned on to Griffin and this in part a reason for his wishing to delegate parts of the job out and eventually move on. (Chris Green was a fantastic bloke for those who never knew him)
