Gay Pride march splits East End community over EDL link

The man who set up next month’s Gay Pride march through the East End has quit the project over his links with the English Defence League

Raymond Berry has stepped down from East End Gay Pride which was set up to organise the march on April 2, over his dealings with the Far Right group. It comes at the end of a day of controversy which has split the East End’s gay community.

An open letter was sent to police and Tower Hamlets council from Out East, part of the Rainbow Hamlets umbrella organisation representing LGBT groups—lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans—calling on the march to be scrapped. It is boycotting the event, claiming other EDL members are still using it to attack Muslims. Berry has accused them of jealousy and “shameful” behaviour.

“The sad reality is that the opposition against us has been from within the LGBT community,” he said. “They have made a simple gay pride event something difficult and unpleasant through sour grapes and jealousy. I find that utterly shameful on their part.”

The march is in response to a wave of ‘hate’ stickers on walls and lamp-posts declaring a ‘gay free’ zone under Allah.

Organisers are going ahead with it—despite the boycott—after accepting Berry’s resignation. East End Gay Pride said in a statement: “Raymond had dealings with the EDL, but has assured us he is no longer has any part of it. He attended marches by the EDL and Unite Against Fascism, but found both too extreme for his beliefs. None of this was previously disclosed to the rest of the team, until it came to light late yesterday evening.”

But Out East remained adamant tonight that the boycott continues. It’s co-ordinator Terry Stewart told the East London Advertiser: “There are still four more EDL members with the organisers—we want them out. The march is now tainted. EDL is using the march as a smoke-screen to attack the Bangladeshi community.”

Organisers expect 1,000 supporters on April 2 for the march setting off from Shadwell along the Commercial Road to Poplar for a rally with speakers including MP Jim Fitzpatrick.

BNP candidate sends abusive email to LGBT group

A Leicestershire LGBT support group is seeking advice from police after receiving an abusive email from a BNP candidate

A Leicestershire LGBT support group is seeking advice from police after receiving an abusive email from a BNP candidate. Candidate Reverend West, who hoped to win the Lincoln City seat for the British National Party, responded to a questionnaire which was sent to a number of candidates by the Leicester Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Centre by stating that gays are “dirty and disgusting”.

The questionnaire asked about views and party policies on issues such as civil partnerships, sex education in schools and “fair and compassionate assessment” of those seeking asylum on the grounds of their sexual orientation. West’s response stated that minority sexual groups were “perverse” and “wicked”. He also labelled the questioner a “complete and utter pervert”, telling him to “get a life and get it cleaned up”.

The LGBT Centre Support Officer, Dennis Bradley, commented on the fact that the BNP candidate had received the questionnaire in the first place, saying: “Unfortunately, as the candidate is neither in Leicester, Leicestershire or Rutland. [He] had had our questions forwarded to him from another candidate, most likely in the same political party”

Bradley said that ultimately he was appalled at the response from West, saying: “I laughed and worried at the same time. If he were to win a seat in the General Election or his party were to win nationally and his views were taken up then we could see discrimination against about 25% of the population.

He added: “And if we were to take out the words gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender from the questions and replace them with ‘black’ there would be far worse recriminations.”

West said that when he received the email questionnaire he: “was deeply shocked and offended by its perversity.”

West, who founded the Christian Council of Britain, replied to the survey with a sermon entitled “In condemnation of sodomy”. He wrote: “It is well-known that homosexuals prey on the young, dependent, and impressionable; and that there is a significant overlap between homosexuality and paedophilia.”

Bradley believes the replies go way beyond acceptability and could constitute a hate campaign which, if substantiated, he has vowed to take “to the full extent of the law”. Bradley commented: “I do know he holds these views personally, but when he says them as a political party’s candidate that’s quite a different matter to a belief you are quite entitled to have in your own home.”

Bradley said a satisfactory and speedy outcome to the exchange would be for Rev West to immediately retract his comments. But West told the Spalding Guardian this week there was no chance of that. He said: “If they didn’t want my answers they shouldn’t send me the questions. I’m outraged – how dare they send them out.”

And in a thinly-veiled reference to the popularity of the BNP, he added: “Let’s see how much we have the right to oppose what they stand for.”

The BNP have given us a wake up call

We can't rely on others to beat the BNP

In June this year the fascist British National Party won the first seats in a national election for a fascist party in British history - with MEPs elected in the North West and Yorkshire regions. Those who have tried to downplay the significance of this breakthrough do a disservice to everyone threatened by the rise of the extreme right. It was wrong to promote complacency about the BNP's prospects before those elections and it is even more dangerous to underestimate the significance of these results.

In fact, the BNP have been steadily building electoral support over recent years, first gaining seats on local councils, then a seat last year on the London Assembly and now their first ever seats in a national election. That reality has to be faced up to and understood if the trend is to be reversed.

As we have already seen on television, radio and in the press, these results have enormously magnified the ability of the fascists to preach their doctrine of hate. There will be more racist attacks, more homophobic violence and more attacks on Muslims as a result. This has been borne out by the recent hate crime statistics which show that racist attacks have increased up to 27-fold in areas with an increased BNP presence.

Not only that, but Euro-MPs receive massive financial resources which will now be used by the BNP to target key seats in the next parliamentary and local elections. And mainstream parties will bend to the BNP's politics in the mistaken belief that this will stop their growth when it will, of course, only legitimise their ideology of division and hate.

The anti-fascist movement must review its strategy to deal with the increased fascist threat. There have been many debates in recent years and reality has now put them to the test.

First, we must understand what fascism is. It stands for the destruction of the trade unions, the left, democratic freedoms and rabid racism and homophobia, posing a mortal threat to those it targets. At any particular time its targets are selected to take advantage of the prejudices that exist in society and are promoted by the media and mainstream parties. In the 1930s, for example, a cutting edge of the Nazis was anti-Semitism.

Today's fascists are as anti-Semitic as ever, but the main prejudices they feed upon and promote are racism and Islamophobia. Any strategy which does not confront racism and Islamophobia head on will fail to defeat the fascists.

Equally, anyone who thinks you can have an anti-fascist movement in Britain today without Black, Asian and Muslim communities playing a central role, alongside the trade unions, the Left and the lesbian and gay communities is simply splitting the forces that need to unite to defeat the fascists.

A united strategy, which brings together all these social forces and challenges the racist myths which are the cutting edge of the BNP, is the key to success. It successfully stopped the BNP in Oldham when it was on course to make a breakthrough in 2001 and removed it from Tower Hamlets council in 1994.

The anti-fascist movement's strategy must be based on what works. Not wasting hundreds of thousands of pounds of trade union funds on a strategy that divides and weakens the anti-fascist majority.

The BNP vote was based on real racist hatred as shown in the yougov poll for Channel 4 on the European elections. The poll indicated that a third of BNP voters think there is a difference in intelligence between the black and white people (compared to 14% of general voters). 94% think that all further immigration should be halted. 44% disagree with gay and lesbian couples having civil partnerships equal to marriage. 79% think Islam is a serious danger to western civilization. The BNP courted these voters in the run up to the election, stating Black and Asian people in this country should be classified as 'racial foreigners' to be 'repatriated' - something which would only be possible through violence and destroying democracy. Their website also targeted 3 mps on a list of "Liars, buggers and thieves" - including Chris Bryant and Ron Davies, as part of a list of criminals, designed to whip up homophobia. Even with the option of voting UKIP, the BNP used the fears and prejudices fanned by the economic crisis to consolidate a racist vote.

The anti fascist majority has received a wake up call. We don't need puffed up claims of BNP crisis. We need an accurate assessment of what the BNP is and an effective strategy to unite the core forces who can lead the majority to defeat them.

Gay Activists Focus On Stopping The BNP

0 Comment (s)
OutRage!, the gay rights action group, has urged LGBT people and their friends to vote in the elections on 3rd May to defeat the BNP. Elections will be held for the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly and for various councils across England.

The BNP is openly homophobic, racist and Islamophobic, but claim they merely represent the views of British working-class white people.

Regarded as no more than a extreme minority group a decade ago, the BNP took their first three seats on Burnley council in 2002. They went on to play on working class resentments about immigration and lack of social housing to win 52 seats on 13 councils in 2006. In Barking and Dagenham, east London, the party is the official opposition with 12 councillors. They are fielding 665 candidates in the 2007 elections.

“Recent election results indicate the BNP could make an electoral breakthrough,” said Brett Lock of OutRage!

“Under the proportional representation voting system for the Scottish and Welsh elections minor parties like the BNP can win seats.

“There is a possibility that the BNP may, for the first time, secure representation in the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly.”

OutRage! says gay voters should be aware that a high turnout will reduce the BNP’s share of the vote and lessen its chances of winning seats.

Nick Griffin, the party leader, is standing for election to the Welsh Assembly. He is credited with turning the fortunes of the BNP round by "softening" the party's image and creating a more media-friendly party organisation.

The BNP has in recent times emphasised the issues that concern voters and played down its extreme racist and homophobia. They recently tried to align themselves with Christians who object to new laws protecting gay people from discrimination.

The BNP fought previous general elections on a pledge to outlaw homosexuality and has described AIDS as “nature taking revenge” on gay men.

Soon after the neo-Nazi bombing of a gay bar in Soho, London, in 1999, which killed three people and maimed dozens more, party leader Nick Griffin attacked lesbian and gay people for “flaunting their perversion” and said this showed why “so many ordinary people find these creatures so repulsive.”

He claims the BNP speaks for “the majority of the population” who, he says, believe “homosexuality is wrong” and that it “needs to be pushed humanely but firmly back into the closet”.

Mr Griffin warns that if gays continue to “press their aims further” there will be an “almighty backlash” which will result in the imprisonment of all homosexuals.

“Lesbians and gay men can help block the election of candidates from the racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim and homophobic British National Party (BNP). Make sure you and your straight friends vote on 3 May,” said Peter Tatchell of OutRage!
