Rain disperses far right group

Efforts by the English Defence League to hold a "meet and greet" in Kingston fizzled out in heavy rain yesterday.

The far-right group had been due to start their first formal event in the borough at 1.30pm on Saturday. Police, who maintained a highly visible presence in town and outside Kingston Mosque, said they recognised a number of suspected EDL members around town. However, they did not deliver any leaflets after heavy rain hit the town in the early afternoon.

About 20 people from the GMB union, Kingston Green Party, Socialist Workers Party, the Union Against Fascism and the South London Anti-Fascist Alliance held their own counter demonstration.

Matthew Smith, of Kingston GMB, said: "Unlike eight EDL members stuck on a table in Wetherspoons, we were out in the rain distributing 500 leaflets. It was an effort to make sure anyone who could be suseptible to know why the EDL are wrong."

David Gair, of Kingston police, said: "Whether their resolve was weakened by the weather I don't know. We have seen a few suspected EDL members, but they did not come out in great numbers."

Right,if you believe in the truth you will allow this post to stand.
Im a member of the EDL and i was at the march on Saturday(which was not an EDL event),it was well worth going. The weather was nasty as you know, about 30 of us went to a pub called the Red Lion,as we stood outside drinking, chatting and smoking, the Syrian protest was coming towards us singing, free free Syria,we started singing E E EDL,it was comical. As they drew level with us both groups started laughing(the chant's sounded so alike),we started to shake hands, exchange leaflets and take pictures.some of those pictures are on the net. This is the important bit,i came home with one of their leaflets,it was about a young boy murdered by the Syrian government, after he had been tortured. It was written from the little boys view of looking down from heaven watching his friends also being killed.NOT ONE Syrian protester asked for death, beheading, dominance or overthrow of the UK.That is what i protest against, these people had dignity, humour and a VERY valid point to make.Post this or don't but it is the truth and if nothing else you should meet the Syrians that i met on Saturday.
