Alternative voting system on its way

Following the discussion here, one of our readers, James J, has sent in his idea of the only alternative voting system absolutely guaranteed to keep Nick Griffin and the BNP out of Parliament forever.

Thanks, James. :-)

There's a nice little quote from the New Stateman today (not really anything to do with this item)

"In an email to supporters, Nick Griffin, leader of the BNP, wrote: "This is the last election the British National Party fights as a large small party - we are now a small large party." Griffin, yet again, showed his powers of coherent thought and devastating eloquence (and misrepresentation of reality: the BNP performed badly all over the country and lost 12 council seats in Barking, where he stood unsuccessfully for election)."

It will be interesting to see what form of PR will eventually be used, but a warning under the Single transferable Vote (STV) system smaller parties have a much better chance. The Guardian article below has some very interesting bar graphs to show how it would work in practise, it would be best if we stuck to the AV (Alternative Vote) method?

"Electoral reform: Alternative vote system would have had minimal impact on outcome of general election

Analysis by Electoral Reform Society shows Liberal Democrats would only have gained 22 more seats under more proportional voting system"

I would have loved to have witnessed this.

A high spot of the night was when the assembled candidates burst into a rendition of the famous 'Dad's Army' theme song but with lyrics of 'Who do you think you are kidding Mr Griffin'.

Hmmm...I geddit now! Losing all those council seats was a deliberate, cunning and strategic ruse to lull anti-fascists into a false sense of security. Clever.

There's an error in the cartoon. He's holding the paper the right way up. Sloppy work.

It's a dangerous game being played, whats it matter if theres 2 or 3 bnp mp's, they still wouldn't have any power. But changing rules just to keep them out is not only fascist, but could be the excuse some are waiting for to turn militant. Then a lot of people could get badly hurt, would you think it was so clever then.

The Tory's are the 'right-wing'.
Democratically elected government, by all accounts. And Cameron wants to abolish the ECHR (Human Rights Charter).... Oh and they will be harsh on immigration and asylum seekers.

Hands up who voted Tory or LibDem?

Whose afraid of PR?

PR and Right-Wing Extremism -

"Unease over the machinations of the British electoral process is prompting calls for electoral reform, with many commentators extolling the virtues of proportional representation (PR)... Although PR has been fairly successful for many countries that employ it, the system is far from flawless – as Israelis have found to their cost for years..."

"Successive governments have paid dearly for forming coalitions with radical minority partners, especially when it comes to the perennial problems associated with the Palestinian conflict. Instead of Israelis having faith in one party to see out its full tenure without having the rug pulled from beneath its feet, reality has meant a constant battle between warring coalition members – often leading to mid-term collapse of governments and early elections... Too many cooks routinely spoil the broth – especially when many of them hail from the extremist, fundamentalist end of the political spectrum"

"Whats it matter if theres 2 or 3 bnp mp's, they still wouldn't have any power" - THIS ARGUMENT IS SO WILDLY NAIVE YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!!!!

I take it the person who made this comment has never had their head kicked-in or had to try and deal with a relative who's been traumatized by racist violence? As for the idea that keeping racists inside the system keeps the BNP from "turning militant" -

1. That's the same argument often used by Nick Griffin, and what it amounts to is the idea that PR is "more" democratic as long as we don't mind the BNP telling society we have to tolerate them within the system otherwise they'll unleash the nail-bombers on us. That's not democracy, it's fucking BLACKMAIL

2. They're militant already. Of course BNP leaders deny responsibility but this IS the movement whose militants are heavily involved in football hooliganism and homophobic and racist attacks, and thank God all 6 or 7 of the most recent David Copeland wannabes were nicked before they could unleash their bombs and their RICIN on us

If the BNP had 2 or 3 MPs they would be cock-a-hoop with confidence and the racist violence would not be contained but would spiral out of control. Witness the recent wave of right-wing terror arrests and EDL attacks in Luton and Stoke which were produced BY the increased electoral confidence of the extreme right, not despite it

Lib Dems and Greens need to stop thinking with their political hard-ons and TRY to see the consequences their actions will have for society

I've been a victim of anti-white racism, but it didn't get me running to vote bnp. Theres good & bad in all races. As for copeland & those if his ilk if they had been leading members who held positions in the party you could have a point. But the truth is they probably had never even been to a meeting. It's these stupid comments " copeland was in the bnp so they must all be bombers" that put people off taking the anti-fascists serious. Dennis Neilson was a labour member & activist does that mean there all murdering cannibals. DUR.

* "As for copeland & those if his ilk if they had been leading members who held positions in the party you could have a point"

Convicted nail-bomber Tony Lecomber was a senior BNP official who Nick Griffin promoted AFTER he was released from jail

* "But the truth is they probably had never even been to a meeting"

David Copeland stewarded BNP meetings and worked as BNP leader John Tyndall's personal bodyguard. Other BNP terrorists include BNP candidates Robert Cottage, Charlotte Lewis and David Lucas - as they were candidates, they've all been to BNP meetings

* Dennis Neilson was a labour member & activist does that mean there all murdering cannibals

The Labour Party did not promote or encourage Dennis Neilson's interest in murder and cannibalism. The BNP did encourage David Copeland's interest in race war - specifically inviting "Turner Diaries" author William Pierce to speak at a BNP meeting that Copeland stewarded, and selling Copeland a copy of the book. Copeland admitted to police his bombing campaign was directly inspired by the Turner Diaries and that the purpose of his campaign was to provoke a race war that would encourage white people to (direct quote) "vote for the BNP"
